Upasana Singh Discusses Sunil Grover’s Struggles with Depression

Post by : Meena Hassan

Renowned comedian and actor Sunil Grover, famous for his roles on The Kapil Sharma Show, encountered significant personal and professional challenges prior to his breakthrough in 2013. In a candid interview, co-star Upasana Singh, known for her role as “Bua”, shared insights into Grover’s tough times battling depression, which put his position on the show in jeopardy.

Sunil Grover’s Struggles

Upasana Singh explained that when the show premiered, Grover was struggling. “He wasn’t in a good place when it started. He told me he had been hospitalized due to his depression and was also facing a lack of work,” she shared.

She praised his remarkable transformation since then, stating, “The first time he visited me with Kapil, I barely recognized him. He has since flourished and we have developed a strong friendship along with mutual respect.”

Threat of Dismissal for Grover

Upasana recalled instances when the show's creative team considered letting Grover go due to his slower speech initially. “They thought he couldn’t keep pace with the ensemble, but I stood up for him, emphasizing his talent and potential. I’m pleased that they decided to retain him, and look at his success now!” she noted.

Conflict Between Grover and Kapil Sharma

Sunil Grover and Kapil Sharma collaborated on hit comedy series such as Comedy Nights With Kapil and The Kapil Sharma Show until their relationship soured in 2017 following an alleged clash during a flight. Reports suggested this incident prompted Grover's exit from the show.

Kapil Sharma later acknowledged issues but insisted that the media's portrayal was exaggerated, saying, “It was reported that I threw a shoe at Sunil and created a scene, but those claims were untrue.”

Reconciliation Attempts

In the aftermath of this fallout, Kapil extended an apology on X (formerly Twitter), writing:

“Paji Sunil Grover, I apologize if I hurt you unintentionally. You know how much you mean to me. I am also upset by this. Love and regards always :)”

Grover replied with a heartfelt note tempered by honesty, stating:

“Bha ji! Your actions did hurt me. Working with you taught me valuable lessons. Just one piece of advice — learn to respect all individuals, not merely animals... show respect towards their existence.”

Years later, the two comedians reconciled during The Great Indian Kapil Show on Netflix, a moment that fulfilled the hopes of many fans who longed to see the duo perform together again.

Sunil Grover’s journey, characterized by resilience and remarkable talent, serves as an inspiring testament to overcoming adversity in the entertainment realm.
