US Suspends Afghan Visas Following Deadly Shooting of Guards

Post by : Raina Al-Fahim

In a significant shift, the United States has temporarily ceased issuing visas for Afghan passport holders following a tragic shooting incident in Washington, DC, that resulted in the death of a National Guard member. This move is part of President Donald Trump’s ongoing immigration enforcement actions.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced the immediate halt to visa processing for Afghan nationals to prioritize public safety. Concurrently, US immigration officials have suspended all asylum evaluations until further notice.

These measures come on the heels of the identification of Afghan citizen Rahmanaullah Lakanwal as the assailant in a shooting that occurred near the White House. The attack resulted in the death of 20-year-old Sarah Beckstrom and left 24-year-old Andrew Wolfe critically injured.

Rubio emphasized the administration’s commitment to safeguarding citizens, noting that the assault appeared unprovoked, with Lakanwal allegedly targeting the soldiers during their patrol.

The CIA has verified that Lakanwal once worked for the agency in Afghanistan before relocating to the US through “Operation Allies Welcome,” initiated during President Biden’s term to assist Afghan allies in safely entering the country after the US withdrawal.

Following Beckstrom's death, the US Attorney’s Office in DC announced that Lakanwal would face upgraded charges, including first-degree murder and multiple assault counts.

Meanwhile, US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) director Joseph Edlow stated that asylum processes would be frozen to ensure thorough vetting of applicants. A comprehensive review of green card applications from 19 targeted nations is also underway as mandated by President Trump.

Trump characterized the shooting as a “terrorist attack” and leveraged this event to amplify critiques of immigration policies from the Biden administration, particularly regarding asylum for Afghan nationals. He expressed intentions to suspend immigration from countries he termed “Third World” without elaborating on which countries this includes.

The President also indicated he would take steps to remove individuals deemed security threats and denaturalize those undermining national stability.

Since his return to office, Trump has introduced stringent immigration protocols, including a drastic reduction of refugees allowed into the US, projected at only 7,500 for 2026—the lowest figure since the 1980s.

These recent decisions highlight an ongoing tightening of immigration rules, posing serious ramifications for Afghan nationals aiming to seek refuge in the United States.
