US to Implement Priority Visa Process for World Cup Attendees in 2026

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

In a significant move, President Donald Trump has unveiled plans for a special priority visa system aimed at fans holding tickets for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup. This initiative is designed to handle the anticipated influx of international visitors for this major sporting event next year, making it easier and quicker for fans to secure visas and attend matches in the US.

Priority Visa to Shorten Wait Times

The announcement, made on a recent Monday, highlights the introduction of a “prioritised appointment scheduling system” for World Cup ticket holders. This means individuals who have acquired their tickets through FIFA will benefit from expedited visa interview schedules, alleviating the typically lengthy wait times associated with securing US entry.

FIFA has confirmed support for this initiative, noting that ticket holders will be eligible to utilize the new visa system starting early in 2026. The US State Department is spearheading this effort, ensuring that while facilitating entry, all necessary security protocols are effectively enforced.

President Trump emphasized the collaboration between the Department of State and the Department of Homeland Security, aimed at guaranteeing that international soccer fans can travel to the US with minimal hurdles, yet under secure conditions.

The 2026 edition of the FIFA World Cup will uniquely be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Given the extensive number of matches and locations involved, officials predict the event will draw millions of fans globally, subsequently providing a substantial economic benefit to host cities through tourism and related sectors.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino, who attended the announcement in the Oval Office, reiterated the importance of prioritizing safety and security, stressing that a robust security strategy is crucial for the World Cup's success.

White House Task Force to Oversee Preparations

This declaration followed a session of the White House task force charged with orchestrating preparations for the World Cup. Established via executive order, the task force will oversee security logistics, transportation, and other essential requirements. President Trump chairs the group, with Vice President JD Vance as vice chair and Andrew Giuliani, son of Rudy Giuliani, in charge as executive director.

Demonstrating his commitment to the tournament, Trump has attended multiple key sporting events and expressed his desire for the World Cup to be a resounding success for the United States.

However, while the president has pledged to facilitate easier travel for fans, critics argue that his immigration policies and increased federal law enforcement could clash with these assurances. Recently, he even suggested relocating World Cup matches from Boston or the postponed 2028 Olympic Games from Los Angeles if he perceives these areas as unsafe or unprepared.

Trump reiterated these remarks, indicating a willingness to deploy National Guard troops to cities seeking assistance in maintaining order during the tournament, also criticizing California's management of crime and emergencies while affirming his hope for Los Angeles to host matches.

As the 2026 event draws nearer, FIFA has been ramping up its presence in the US, having opened an office at Trump Tower in June, an event attended by Eric Trump, and a Miami office last year that houses part of FIFA's legal operations.

The World Cup’s group-stage draw is scheduled for next month at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., a venue where Trump has shown interest in significant developments. This draw will determine match pairings and locations.
