Dubai: The United States has officially launched a drone initiative in the Middle East, marking a pivotal change in its defence strategy. Task Force Scorpion Strike, controlled by US Central Command (CENTCOM), will manage America’s inaugural operational squadron of one-way attack drones, designed specifically to counter Iran’s burgeoning drone capabilities.
CENTCOM announced the formation of this task force on Wednesday, calling it a significant advancement in adapting to the growing prevalence of low-cost, long-range drones on the battlefield. This newly developed fleet, referred to as the Low-cost Unmanned Combat Attack System (LUCAS), utilizes designs that were reverse-engineered after the US acquired and studied an Iranian Shahed drone.
The outcome is a 10-foot autonomous device that closely resembles the popular Shahed-136, but is engineered with US-grade reliability. Each LUCAS drone is estimated to cost around $35,000, which is a substantial saving compared to the millions often spent on traditional interceptors.
Transforming the Drone Landscape
Iran’s Shahed-136 drones have significantly altered conflict dynamics, making appearances from the Red Sea to Ukraine, often deployed in swarms that challenge existing air-defence systems. In the last couple of years, Iran-backed militias have persistently targeted US positions in Iraq, Syria, and Jordan, while Houthi combatants have unleashed relentless drone and missile strikes against commercial vessels in the Red Sea.
The situation became more critical in 2024 when Iran launched nearly 170 drones toward Israel, inciting extensive interception measures by US and allied forces. These ongoing strikes have hastened the Pentagon's initiative to embrace lower-cost systems capable of addressing mass attacks.
Designed for autonomous, long-distance missions, LUCAS drones can be launched using catapults, rocket-assist systems, or from mobile vehicles, allowing for swift deployment across varied terrains. CENTCOM has not revealed how many drones are currently operational, stating only that “many” are deployed in the vicinity, with more units expected soon.
Task Force Established
Task Force Scorpion Strike consists of nearly two dozen personnel, including several from US Special Operations Command–Central. Not all members are positioned in the region, and details regarding the squadron's location are classified.
This initiative follows CENTCOM's decision to expedite the acquisition of budget-friendly unmanned systems, acknowledging that adversaries’ affordable attack drones are outpacing traditional US armaments. With LUCAS's deployment, the US demonstrates a strategic shift toward meeting low-cost threats with economical solutions.
The establishment of this new squadron highlights a transformative trend in contemporary warfare, where outcomes are increasingly driven by not just precise weaponry but also cost-effectiveness, volume, and flexibility.
