Trinidad and Tobago has granted permission for United States military aircraft to utilize its airports, raising alarms about potential escalation in tensions related to Venezuela. The nation, situated roughly 12 kilometers away from Venezuela, has expressed strong backing for President Donald Trump’s military and economic strategy against Caracas.
The foreign ministry of Trinidad stated that this authorization enables Washington to employ local airports for logistical functions, such as supply restocking and routine personnel rotations. Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar affirmed that Trinidad is working in conjunction with the US to enhance its military footprint in the Caribbean.
US authorities have portrayed these operations as measures to combat narco-terrorism, yet analysts suggest this move signals increased pressure on Venezuela and its leftist leader, Nicolas Maduro, whom the US does not recognize as the legitimate head of state. In October, a US guided missile destroyer was stationed near Trinidad for joint exercises within striking distance of Venezuela. Additionally, US Marines conducted drills throughout the archipelago last month.
The US has bolstered its surveillance in the region by installing radar at a new airport in Tobago. Officials claim this setup is designed to intercept Venezuelan drug trafficking and halt oil shipments defying sanctions. However, Caracas has condemned Trinidad and Tobago’s collaboration with the US. Venezuelan officials accused the island of complicity in the alleged “theft” of Venezuelan oil after US forces captured a tanker reportedly breaching sanctions. Venezuela labeled this as an act of international piracy.
Venezuelan Vice President Delcy Rodriguez criticized Prime Minister Persad-Bissessar for adopting a “hostile agenda” towards Venezuela and reiterated the suspension of natural gas exploration with Trinidad. In response to the backlash, Trinidad’s Foreign Minister Sean Sobers defended the agreement as part of the government’s dedication to regional safety and security, highlighting collaboration to safeguard Trinidad and Tobago as well as the broader Caribbean region.
As tensions escalate, Trinidad and Tobago's strategic position makes it a pivotal center for US military operations in the Caribbean, especially in light of the intensifying conflict between Washington and Caracas regarding oil, sanctions, and regional power. Analysts believe the ongoing military partnership underscores the increasing importance of security and stability in the Caribbean.
