US Revokes Colombian President Petro’s Visa Over Pro-Palestinian Comments

Post by : Saif Al-Najjar

The United States announced it will revoke the visa of Colombian President Gustavo Petro after he spoke at a pro-Palestinian demonstration in New York on Friday. Petro urged U.S. soldiers to disobey President Donald Trump’s orders and called for a global force to help Palestinians, raising tensions between Colombia and the U.S.

Petro’s Speech in New York

President Petro addressed a crowd of pro-Palestinian protesters outside the United Nations headquarters in Manhattan. During his speech, he called for an international armed force to protect Palestinians. He said:

“This force has to be bigger than that of the United States.”

He also spoke directly to U.S. soldiers, asking them:

“I ask all the soldiers of the army of the United States not to point their guns at people. Disobey the orders of Trump. Obey the orders of humanity.”

These remarks received widespread attention and prompted a strong response from the U.S. government.

US Response

The U.S. State Department quickly responded, posting on X:

“We will revoke Petro’s visa due to his reckless and incendiary actions.”

The decision comes amid growing tension over the Gaza war and Petro’s criticisms of President Trump’s policies. It is not yet clear if Petro was still in New York when the visa revocation was announced.

Background: Petro and Trump

Gustavo Petro, Colombia’s first leftist president, has often clashed with Donald Trump on several issues:

Gaza Conflict: Petro criticized Israel’s military campaign in Gaza and accused the U.S. of supporting attacks that harm civilians.

Drug Policy: Petro called for legal action against U.S. missile strikes on boats suspected of drug trafficking in Caribbean waters.

Human Rights: Petro emphasizes the need for global action to protect human rights in conflict zones.

These positions have made him a vocal opponent of Trump’s approach to foreign policy and military operations.

Gaza Conflict Context

The Gaza war is central to this controversy. On October 7, 2023, Hamas militants attacked Israel, killing about 1,200 people and taking 251 hostages. Israel responded with a major military campaign in Gaza. According to Gaza health authorities, more than 65,000 Palestinians have died since the conflict began, and the entire population of Gaza has been displaced.

At the same time, countries including France, Britain, Australia, and Canada have recognized Palestinian statehood. Israel and the U.S. strongly oppose these moves, creating further diplomatic tension.

Why This Report Matters

Petro’s speech and the U.S. response are significant for several reasons:

International Diplomacy: The incident shows how delicate relations are between nations when leaders publicly criticize allies.

Freedom of Speech vs. Policy: Petro exercised his right to speak, but the U.S. government responded to statements that directly challenged its authority.

Middle East Focus: The Gaza conflict continues to shape global politics, with world leaders taking public positions.

Regional Tensions: Latin American countries, including Colombia, have long-standing relationships with the U.S., which can be affected by outspoken statements.

Analysis

Petro’s remarks, while controversial, reflect concern for human rights and civilian protection in Gaza. By calling for global action and urging soldiers to consider ethical choices, he emphasizes the humanitarian dimension of the conflict.

On the other hand, the U.S. response shows how governments prioritize maintaining authority and protecting policy positions. Both sides have reasons for their actions: Petro seeks to protect civilians, while the U.S. aims to uphold its international policies and discipline.

This incident highlights the complex balance between diplomacy, human rights advocacy, and national interests. It also shows how conflicts in one region, such as Gaza, can affect relations between countries far away.
