Trump Meets Erdogan At White House To Discuss Fighter Jets

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

President Donald Trump welcomed Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to the White House on September 25, 2025. The two-hour meeting drew global attention due to discussions on advanced fighter jet sales, Turkey’s relationship with Russia, the war in Ukraine, and conflicts in Gaza and Syria.

F-35 Fighter Jets

A major topic was the possibility of allowing Turkey to buy advanced F-35 jets again. Turkey had been removed from the program during Trump’s first term because of its purchase of the S-400 missile system from Russia. American officials feared that Russia could gain sensitive information on the F-35. Erdogan emphasized the importance of joining the program again.

Trump Signals Possible Agreement

During the meeting, Trump indicated that both sides might reach a deal on fighter jets. He told reporters that each country has needs and a solution would be found, calling the talks “a good meeting.” This was Erdogan’s first White House visit since 2019.

Human Rights Concerns

Turkey’s democratic practices under Erdogan have been questioned, with critics citing limits on freedom of expression and fair trials. These concerns led previous U.S. administrations to keep distance, but Trump sees Erdogan as a key partner in mediating regional conflicts.

Turkey’s Ties With Russia

Trump addressed Turkey’s energy purchases from Russia, which have totaled over $90 billion since 2023 after Europe reduced imports. He urged Erdogan to reduce reliance on Russian oil and gas. Turkey’s close ties to both Russia and Ukraine make it a unique mediator in global conflicts.

Ukraine War and U.S. Policy Shift

Earlier in the week, Trump surprised observers by supporting Ukraine’s full recovery of lost territories. During the meeting, he encouraged Erdogan to use his influence to push for peace between Russia and Ukraine.

Erdogan’s Defense Priorities

The F-35 program was a top priority for Erdogan. He prepared to discuss it in depth, stressing that Turkey, as a strategic U.S. partner, should not be blocked from the program.

Regional Conflicts: Syria and Gaza

Syria: Trump credited Erdogan with supporting rebel forces that helped remove Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad in December, highlighting Turkey’s influence in shaping the region.
Gaza: Erdogan has criticized Israel’s campaign in Gaza, calling it genocide. Over 65,000 Palestinians have been killed, and nearly 90% of homes damaged or destroyed. Trump convened Arab and Muslim leaders, including Erdogan, to discuss the situation.

Turkey’s Role in Global Politics

Turkey aims to act as a stabilizing force globally. Maintaining ties with both Ukraine and Russia, Turkey positions itself as a mediator in conflicts and a security partner for Europe and the Middle East. Its influence spans trade, energy, and regional stability discussions.

Implications for U.S.-Turkey Relations

The meeting demonstrated shifting U.S. foreign policy under Trump. Turkey seeks advanced U.S. weapons and recognition, while the U.S. wants reduced Russian dependence and cooperation on peace initiatives. Both leaders signaled an intent to strengthen bilateral ties while addressing global challenges.

Trump’s engagement with Erdogan highlights Turkey’s strategic importance in international affairs. From defense programs and energy policy to regional peace negotiations, the White House meeting emphasized that Turkey remains a key player in shaping global outcomes.
