The United States is facing its third major winter storm in a single week, which is expected to intensify rapidly into a bomb cyclone by Tuesday. The storm is forecast to bring heavy snow to the northeastern states and New England, creating difficult travel conditions and widespread disruptions.
As of early December, snow has already covered more than one-third of the country, marking a significant start to the meteorological winter season. CNN reports that the last time this much snow was recorded on December 1 was in 2019, when about 41% of the US experienced snow cover.
Weather alerts are now in effect across 27 states, covering a stretch of 1,500 miles. While some northeastern states issued winter storm warnings, others, from Montana to Maine, have placed winter weather advisories for safety. Authorities are urging residents to stay updated on local forecasts and to avoid unnecessary travel.
A bomb cyclone occurs when a storm rapidly strengthens, with its atmospheric pressure dropping sharply in a short period, usually within 24 hours. For a storm to officially meet this criteria, the pressure must fall at least 24 millibars in one day, a process known as “bombogenesis.” Current forecasts indicate that the storm’s pressure could drop by 27 to 29 millibars from Tuesday to Wednesday, signaling a powerful and fast-developing system.
Snowfall reports are already significant in some areas. Southwest Colorado’s Rockies recorded 14 inches of snow, while Kansas City received 2 to 4 inches. St. Louis reported 2.3 inches, with multiple traffic accidents reported along highways and intersections. Local authorities in St. Louis warned commuters to drive with extreme caution due to worsening road conditions.
In Nebraska, cities like Omaha and Lincoln saw around 1.5 inches of snow. Chicago, which experienced 8.4 inches of snow on Saturday, received additional snowfall, with light snow affecting both of the city’s airports. Forecasts suggest only small additional accumulations of one to two inches by Monday night, but winter conditions continue to challenge travel and daily activities.
Experts warn that the storm may continue to impact travel, with possible flight delays and road closures. Residents across affected states are encouraged to follow weather updates, prepare for snow removal, and exercise caution during travel.
This winter storm highlights the increasing severity of seasonal weather events and emphasizes the need for preparedness, especially as travel and commuting conditions remain dangerous. Staying informed through local weather services and taking preventive measures is essential for safety during this bomb cyclone event.
