This Friday, the Utah Mammoth will be looking to dampen the spirits of New York Islanders rookie Matthew Schaefer as they face off in Salt Lake City.
The Islanders enter this contest with confidence, having won three straight games, including a thrilling 4-3 overtime triumph against the Vegas Golden Knights on Thursday. Jean-Gabriel Pageau scored a clutch short-handed goal in overtime, marking the Islanders’ second consecutive win in extra time.
The Mammoth, on the other hand, just broke a three-game losing streak with a decisive 5-2 victory over the Buffalo Sabres on Wednesday. After facing a 2-0 deficit, Utah managed to score four goals in the final period to clinch the win.
Schaefer’s Ascent to Stardom
Rookie Matthew Schaefer, who was the top draft pick this year, continues to make waves. He contributed a goal and an assist in the recent game against Vegas, bringing his total to 14 points (six goals, eight assists) in 17 matches. This impressive start places him third all-time for 18-year-old defensemen, tying Ray Bourque (14 points in 19 games) and only trailing Phil Housley (16 points in 19 games) and Bobby Orr (13 points in 19 games).
“We kept battling hard throughout the game,” said Schaefer. “From the get-go, we played with momentum. Ilya Sorokin was tremendous for us, and having a goalie like him is a big advantage.”
Islanders’ Collective Effort
Mathew Barzal scored a crucial equalizer with just under three minutes to go. Emil Heineman also found the net, while Bo Horvat notched two assists to extend his point streak to seven games. Goalie Ilya Sorokin made 26 saves, including three in the overtime period. David Rittich, holding a record of 3-2-0 this season with a 3.41 GAA, is set to start for the Islanders in Salt Lake City.
Mammoth Strong at Home
In Utah’s victory over Buffalo, JJ Peterka, Nick Schmaltz, and Clayton Keller each scored a goal and provided an assist. Karel Vejmelka contributed with 17 saves, and a remarkable total of 11 players scored for the Mammoth, including four defensemen, showcasing their strong offensive depth from the blue line this season.
“We’ve focused on being more aggressive and aiming to get pucks in the middle,” noted defenseman Nick DeSimone, who scored his first goal of the season. “We want to set up our forwards and create scoring opportunities from there.”
The comeback win against Buffalo marked Utah’s first of the season and their sixth overall. Now boasting a home record of 5-1-0, the Mammoth continue to rely on their robust defensive game. Coach Andre Tourigny stated, “We defend with intensity, compelling opponents to make snap decisions. That’s one of our greatest strengths.”
Last season, the two teams were evenly matched, with Utah winning 5-4 on Long Island, while the Islanders took 2-1 in Salt Lake City. Vejmelka holds a 2-2 record against New York, along with a 2.02 GAA and .931 save percentage.
As the two teams gear up for their matchup on Friday, a thrilling showdown seems inevitable between the Mammoth seeking to build upon their momentum and the rookie defenseman on the rise.
