Post by : Bianca Haleem

On Wednesday evening, Venezuela experienced two major earthquakes, resulting in extensive damage and a declared state of emergency across the nation.

The first quake, measuring 7.2, struck approximately 160 kilometers west of Caracas, followed by a 7.5 magnitude quake less than a minute later, as reported by the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

Both quakes prompted chaotic scenes in various regions, as residents evacuated buildings and rescue teams sprang into action.

State of Emergency Issued in Venezuela

Interim President Delcy Rodriguez spoke to the nation, alongside national assembly president Jorge Rodriguez and Interim Minister Diosdado Cabello, confirming the state of emergency.

The government urged vigilance as videos of the destruction spread across social media platforms, showing collapsed buildings and clouds of dust as rescuers sought survivors.

Concerns Over Casualties Raised by USGS

Though no official casualty figures have been reported yet, the USGS predicted that fatalities might range between 10,000 and 100,000.

The agency also projected economic losses could reach up to 5% of Venezuela’s GDP due to the destruction's severity.

Footage Captures Building Collapses

International media, including Reuters, shared videos showing crowds forming in streets as buildings swayed and collapsed.

Meteorologist Chris Jackson located a viral video showing a residential building’s collapse in Tucacas, highlighting the severe damage endured by the structure.
