Maria Corina Machado, the renowned Venezuelan opposition figure and Nobel Peace Prize laureate, fractured her vertebra during a treacherous journey from Venezuela to Norway last week. At 58, she took on immense risks aboard a small fishing boat to attend the prestigious Oslo ceremony.
Reports indicate Machado’s vessel encountered severe waves, making the crossing exceptionally perilous. Her spokeswoman, Claudia Macera, confirmed the injury but stated that no additional details would be shared beyond the Norwegian outlet Aftenposten.
Displaying unwavering spirit, Machado greeted supporters upon arriving in Oslo early Thursday, overcoming barriers despite the pain from her injury.
Machado had voiced concerns for her safety during the crossing, illustrating the severe risks she faced. Medical staff attended to her right away at Oslo University Hospital in Ulleval for observations.
However, the injury hindered her from attending the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony scheduled for Wednesday, postponing her participation in this globally anticipated event. Her supporters have commendably acknowledged her determination, noting the significant impact of her arrival under such challenging conditions.
