At 45, seven-time major champion Venus Williams will compete at the Auckland Classic in January after receiving a wild card for the tournament scheduled from January 5-11.
Williams returned to competition at the US Open in August following a 16-month break. Tournament director Nicolas Lamperin praised her fitness and influence, saying, "She is one of the great players of the modern era, and her results on court speak for themselves. Off court, she has made a significant contribution to the sport and to the progress of women players worldwide."
Lamperin noted Williams’ role in advancing the women's game, adding that her passion for tennis has inspired the next generation of players.
Williams previously won the Auckland Classic in 2015, defeating Caroline Wozniacki in the final. Her career honours include five Wimbledon singles crowns, two US Open titles and an Olympic gold medal from Sydney 2000.
Describing her return as a "privilege," Lamperin encouraged fans to see one of the game's all-time greats in action.
Japan’s four-time major champion Naomi Osaka has also been confirmed for the event.
The Australian Open begins in Melbourne on January 18, with the Auckland Classic serving as a key lead-up tournament for players preparing for the Grand Slam.
