Villa and Forest Secure Wins, Celtic and Rangers Face Tough Losses

Post by : Meena Hassan

Aston Villa maintained their strong form in the Europa League, achieving a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Basel in Switzerland. This marks their eighth consecutive win across all competitions, showcasing their prowess. The visitors started strong with Evann Guessand scoring an early goal. Basel fought back to equalize midway through the first half when Flavius Daniliuc headed in from a precise delivery by Xherdan Shaqiri. However, Villa quickly regained their footing, with Youri Tielemans striking brilliantly from outside the box early in the second half to secure the win. This victory keeps Villa third in their Europa League group with 15 points, equal on goal difference with Lyon and Midtjylland, reflecting their dominant performance under Unai Emery this season.

Nottingham Forest delivered an exciting performance away at Utrecht, winning 2-1 to keep their hopes high for direct qualification to the Europa League's last 16. Arnaud Kalimuendo netted the opening goal shortly after halftime. Utrecht responded with Mike van der Hoorn leveling the score with a powerful header. However, Forest's determination shone through, with Igor Jesus scoring a dramatic last-minute winner, marking Forest’s first European away victory since 1995. Manager Sean Dyche commended his team's resilience and composure, highlighting their growing confidence in European play.

Scottish champions Celtic faced a disappointing night at home, suffering a 3-0 defeat against Roma. An early own goal by Liam Scales gave Roma an advantage, which was compounded by on-loan striker Evan Ferguson’s first-half brace to complete their dominant performance. Rangers also experienced a setback in Europe, losing 2-1 to Hungarian side Ferencvaros. Despite Bojan Miovski giving Rangers an early lead, they were unable to hold on as a late strike from Barnabas Varga left them with only a single point in the group stage.

In other news, Lyon continued their strong group stage performance with a 2-1 win over Go Ahead Eagles, while Midtjylland narrowly secured a 1-0 victory against Genk. These results ensure a competitive and unpredictable Europa League group standings, setting the stage for a fierce fight for the final places in the last 16 as every point becomes crucial in the remaining matches.
