In recent weeks, Bangladesh's baul singers, known for their spiritual music and poetry, have faced violent attacks. On Wednesday, three performers were brutally assaulted by a radical Islamist mob outside the Thakurgaon district court. The attackers are reportedly associated with Tawhidi Janata, a group linked to extremism.
UNESCO recognizes bauls for their unique cultural contributions, as they employ instruments like Ektara, khol drums, and cymbals to create songs that fuse Hindu and Sufi spiritual elements, focusing on personal freedom and soul liberation.
These violent incidents follow the arrest of well-known baul artist Abul Sarkar, charged with blasphemy, which has ignited protests from civil society, students, and artists. They express concerns about rising religious extremism under the interim leadership of Muhammad Yunus.
While Muhammad Yunus has yet to comment on these attacks, his press secretary termed the incidents "deplorable" and stated that investigations are underway. Detractors claim that since Yunus assumed office, radical Islamist factions have gained increased boldness, especially after the release of prior extremists.
Bangladesh's main opposition party, the BNP, has denounced the violence, branding it as "heinous acts." Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir highlighted that baul performances are crucial to the nation's cultural fabric, stressing that targeting them is intolerable.
Since the removal of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, extremist groups have not only disrupted cultural events but have also targeted moderate Sufi shrines, demonstrating escalating religious turmoil. These latest events underscore the rising threats faced by minority communities and artistic groups in Bangladesh.
