Iran Withdraws from 2026 World Cup Draw Amid Visa Denial

Iran Withdraws from 2026 World Cup Draw Amid Visa Denial

Post by : Bianca Haleem

In a surprising move, Iran has declared it will not participate in the 2026 World Cup draw scheduled in Washington, citing visa issues that barred its officials from entering the United States. This announcement was made public on Friday via the IRNA news agency.

A spokesperson for the Iranian soccer federation, Amir-Mahdi Alavi, mentioned that the visa issues were not merely about sports, pointing to larger geopolitical tensions.

The delegation, which was to be headed by Mehdi Taj, the president of the Iranian Football Federation and a prominent figure in both Asian and international soccer, had planned to attend the draw at the Kennedy Center on December 5. Taj also plays significant roles in FIFA committees overseeing competitive events and men’s national team soccer.

This incident unfolds against the backdrop of the Trump administration’s travel ban implemented in June, which impacts citizens from twelve nations, including Iran and Haiti. Although there are exemptions for athletes and their immediate support teams attending major sporting events like the World Cup, it remains uncertain whether these exceptions apply to the event draw.

Iran's absence casts uncertainty over FIFA's preparations for the historic 48-team World Cup, to be co-hosted by the U.S., Canada, and Mexico from June 11 to July 19. The situation raises important questions regarding the intersection of political challenges and global sporting events.

FIFA has yet to respond to this development, and it has been reported that the Iranian federation is seeking a resolution with the organization.
