The Golden State Warriors achieved a remarkable 137-131 overtime victory against the Denver Nuggets on Thursday evening in San Francisco. This matchup was highlighted by standout efforts and key moments, showcasing a scoring contest between Stephen Curry and Aaron Gordon. Just two days prior, the Warriors had kicked off their season with a win against the Los Angeles Lakers.
As the game progressed into overtime, the Nuggets held a slim lead of 125-123 after Aaron Gordon nailed a tiebreaking three-pointer with just 26 seconds left in regulation. However, Curry quickly responded, sinking a deep shot from 34 feet with only 4.1 seconds on the clock, forcing the game into overtime. This intense finish set the stage for a fiercely contested overtime period between these two Western Conference teams.
Stephen Curry led the Warriors with an impressive 42 points, including a superb 10-for-11 from beyond the arc. Alongside Al Horford and Jimmy Butler III, Curry ignited a critical 12-2 run in overtime, capped by Horford's three-pointer and Curry’s layup with 23.9 seconds on the clock, securing the victory for Golden State. Curry’s outstanding performance was pivotal in navigating the challenge posed by Denver.
Aaron Gordon notched a career-high 50 points, eclipsing his previous record of 41 set in 2017, and matched a season opening record with 10 three-pointers, nearly breaking J.R. Smith’s franchise mark. Despite his extraordinary shooting display, Denver could not clinch the win as Golden State took control down the stretch.
Nikola Jokic delivered a strong triple-double, contributing 21 points, 13 rebounds, and 10 assists, marking his fourth consecutive opening game with a triple-double, equaling NBA legend Oscar Robertson's record. Although Jokic kept Denver in the game with his contributions, the Nuggets could not secure a win in the overtime period.
Beyond Curry, six other Warriors also reached double figures, including Jimmy Butler with 21 points, Jonathan Kuminga with 14, and both Draymond Green and Al Horford with 13 each, along with Brandin Podziemski and Buddy Hield contributing 11 points. Draymond Green’s stats included eight rebounds and eight assists, playing a significant role on both ends of the court.
For the Nuggets, Jamal Murray added 25 points and 10 assists, while Tim Hardaway Jr. chipped in with 10 points. Denver had an early 14-point lead in the first half, but the Warriors’ efficient shooting, strong teamwork, and critical plays during the final moments enabled them to stage a comeback. Gordon’s standout performance showcased Denver’s skill but ultimately fell short of victory.
The Golden State Warriors demonstrated their resilience, teamwork, and talent in overcoming the Denver Nuggets in this thrilling overtime encounter. Curry’s 42 points, paired with vital support from his teammates, marked a strong start for the Warriors this season, contrasted by Aaron Gordon’s impressive individual effort that narrowly missed clinching a win for Denver.
