India’s all-rounder Washington Sundar has been ruled out of the ongoing one-day international series due to a side strain he sustained in the opening match against New Zealand last week. The injury occurred while bowling, prompting immediate concerns from the team management.
Post-injury, Sundar underwent medical scans to evaluate the problem’s severity. The scans confirmed a side strain, leading him to consult with a medical expert. Following this assessment, doctors recommended complete rest for several days to facilitate his healing. After recuperation, Sundar is expected to report to the BCCI Centre of Excellence, where a comprehensive rehabilitation program will be devised to track his recovery.
This injury has compelled the men’s selection committee to reshape the squad, with leg-spinner Ravi Bishnoi stepping in as Sundar’s replacement, enhancing India's bowling arsenal as the series continues. Additionally, Shreyas Iyer has been brought into the T20I lineup for the first three matches, filling the void left by the injured Tilak Varma.
Sundar's absence is a notable blow to the Indian team, particularly with the World Cup looming. Recently included in India's squad for the prestigious tournament, his recovery will be closely monitored in the days ahead. Team officials remain optimistic that prompt treatment and rehabilitation will enable him to return in time for the global event.
The New Zealand series, taking place from January 21 to 31, is crucial as it serves as essential preparation for India ahead of the biennial World Cup. The tournament is set to commence on February 7, co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka.
In the World Cup, India has been placed in Group A. They will begin their campaign against the United States on opening day, followed by matches against Namibia, Pakistan, and the Netherlands, aiming to gain momentum early in the competition.
