Shane Watson Takes On Role as Assistant Coach for Kolkata Knight Riders

Shane Watson, the renowned former Australian cricketer, has been appointed as the assistant coach of the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in preparation for the 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL) season. This announcement comes as the franchise undergoes a significant coaching revamp after a challenging 2025 season that left KKR in seventh place. Watson will collaborate with newly appointed head coach Abhishek Nayar and mentor Dwayne Bravo, forming a robust coaching triumvirate for the two-time IPL champions.

In addition to Watson, former New Zealand fast bowler Tim Southee joins the coaching staff in a critical support role. Southee has recently balanced his franchise commitments while serving as a consultant for the England team over the last few months. Before stepping into a coaching role, Shane Watson had a stellar career as an all-rounder in cricket. Renowned for his aggressive batting, effective medium-pace deliveries, and pivotal match performances, Watson was celebrated as one of cricket's finest all-rounders. In the IPL, his impact was significant across various franchises, contributing to multiple title victories.

Watson initiated his IPL career with the Rajasthan Royals, where he was awarded the Most Valuable Player (MVP) during their 2008 championship season. His role as an all-rounder established him as one of the tournament's most reliable players. He later played for Chennai Super Kings (CSK), playing a crucial role in their 2018 title win, with 555 runs in 15 matches, including a memorable century in the final that secured the trophy. Before retiring as a player in 2020, he also represented Royal Challengers Bengaluru in 2016 and 2017.
