West Virginia Triumphs Over Duke with Just Five Players

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

West Virginia's coach Mark Kellogg epitomized simplicity at halftime, inscribing just two words on the board: “Believe” and “Breathe.” With only five active players left due to ejections, the odds seemed insurmountable. However, Kellogg's message inspired calm and perseverance among his players, laying the groundwork for one of the most unexpected victories of the season.

Kellogg described this game as the wildest he had experienced in his career, expressing pride in his team's tenacity and fortitude. He emphasized their commitment to reflecting the fighting spirit of West Virginia, shown dramatically in this match. With just five players on the court, including only one starter, the Mountaineers maintained their composure, steering clear of fouls and displaying patience. They achieved the unbelievable—securing a 57-49 win against No. 15 Duke before a packed audience at Colonial Hall in Greenbrier.

Despite being officially labeled as a neutral site, the atmosphere felt entirely like a home game for West Virginia, with over 1,200 supporters dressed in blue and gold voicing their enthusiasm. The victory was celebrated with the playing of “Take Me Home, Country Roads,” a moment neither Kellogg nor his players anticipated so far from Morgantown.

The match's dynamics shifted dramatically due to a scuffle just before halftime. Duke was leading 23-20 when Jordan Wood of Duke exchanged words with West Virginia's Jordan Harrison, who retaliated. After thorough reviews, officials ejected both players and several others from West Virginia, leaving the team with only five players for the remainder of the game.

Confronted with this reality, Kellogg swiftly devised a strategy. Sydney Shaw was the lone starter left and was yet to score. The other survivors were newer transfers and bench players, unfamiliar with extended play. By entrusting Shaw with the offensive duties and adopting a 2-3 zone defense to minimize fouls, the team played strategically and cautiously.

Remarkably, the adjusted strategy exceeded expectations. West Virginia surged ahead, outscoring Duke 24-9 during the third quarter. The Blue Devils struggled to penetrate the zone defense, missing opportunities and committing turnovers. Meanwhile, West Virginia gathered confidence and found its rhythm, taking a surprising double-digit lead by the end of the quarter.

Duke's coach Kara Lawson acknowledged West Virginia's deserved win, commending their energy and fight, but lamented her team's lack of response following the chaotic halftime. She admitted that her players didn’t perform adequately, expressing her commitment to having the team prepared.

In the final quarter, West Virginia maintained its lead. Shaw scored 16 points, while Rivière added 12 points and eight rebounds. The Mountaineers capitalized on their free throw opportunities, sinking 14 of 18, as Duke struggled with missed layups and turnovers. Though Duke managed to close the gap to four with 36 seconds left, West Virginia held firm, securing the win with crucial free throws.

As the game concluded, West Virginia reveled in a landmark victory, with Rivière celebrating enthusiastically in front of the elated crowd. Kellogg expressed hope that this moment could symbolize a turning point for the team, leading them to a 4-0 season start. This victory indeed demonstrated a powerful truth: West Virginia coped with adversity remarkably.
