WestJet Airlines has confirmed it is on the path to receiving its first Boeing 737 MAX 10 aircraft by the end of 2026. CEO Alexis von Hoensbroech shared that Boeing is actively addressing technical challenges and securing approval from U.S. aviation bodies, instilling confidence that the aircraft will meet its delivery timeline.
As one of the initial airlines poised to take delivery of the MAX 10, which is expected to receive certification alongside the MAX 7 in 2026, WestJet is aware of a critical engine anti-ice system issue that necessitates resolution to avoid overheating risks. With advancements made, the airline is optimistic about receiving the first aircraft in the final months of 2026, contingent on smooth progress.
In case of unexpected delays from Boeing, WestJet is prepared to pivot by deploying smaller MAX 8 models to maintain operational continuity.
In conjunction with its aircraft developments, WestJet has decided to divert more routes away from the U.S. in favor of South America and Europe, responding to a decline in Canadian air travel to the U.S. Trade issues have led to a decrease in Canadians flying to the States. A report from Statistics Canada indicates that in September 2025, air travel to other overseas regions rose by 3.9%, while Canadian travelers returning from the U.S. dropped by 27.1% in the same timeframe.
In light of evolving travel preferences, WestJet has unveiled new seasonal international routes, including direct flights from Toronto and Halifax to fresh destinations, such as Medellin, Colombia—marking the airline’s inaugural service to South America. The goal of these new routes is to captivate international travelers and bolster tourism in various locales.
As Canada’s second-largest airline, WestJet's strategy is poised to influence the nation’s travel landscape significantly in the upcoming years. With the prospect of new aircraft and added international routes, the airline is gearing up for a future where travelers seek alternatives beyond U.S. destinations.
