Rare Penalty Imposed After Fans Disrupt WHL Playoff Game

Post by : Shweta

During a heated WHL playoff clash, the Prince George Cougars faced an unusual two-minute bench penalty after fans hurled beer and objects onto the ice in Game 4 against the Penticton Vees.

The intense game in Prince George saw tensions mount as spectators reacted to contentious calls from referees. The crowd's frustration escalated into loud chants directed at officials, creating a volatile atmosphere.

Things took a turn for the worse in the third period when the Cougars accrued a five-minute major penalty and game misconduct for defenseman Corbin Vaughan, which stirred further unrest among the crowd. Following a delay-of-game call, some fans began throwing drinks and debris onto the ice, ignoring multiple warnings from event staff.

In a rare move, referees imposed a bench minor penalty on the Cougars for fan misconduct. This decision left many, including head coach Mark Lamb, astonished, as he admitted to never witnessing such a penalty for fan behavior in his extensive career.

This disruption influenced the outcome, as the Vees took advantage, scoring four power-play goals—three in the last five minutes—to clinch a 5-2 win and even the best-of-seven series at 2-2.

The match also saw fighting erupt in the stands, adding to the turmoil. The Cougars later remarked on social media that this was among the most peculiar games they had ever played.

The league's officials are yet to comment in detail regarding this incident, which has ignited conversations about fan behavior and game oversight, especially in critical playoff conditions.
