Wicked: For Good Achieves Impressive Box Office Debut

Post by : Meena Hassan

The highly anticipated second part of the film adaptation of Wicked, titled Wicked: For Good, brought together Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba and Ariana Grande as Glinda, achieving the third-highest domestic opening weekend ever for a musical. This record follows Disney's 2019 photorealistic The Lion King and the 2017 Beauty and the Beast remake, as reported by Universal Pictures and Comscore.

This film revitalized the North American box office, which had seen a nine-week downturn, where total ticket sales hadn't reached the $100 million mark.

Jim Orr, Universal’s president of domestic theatrical distribution, remarked, "It’s incredible to witness the dedication of our filmmakers, Marc Platt and Jon Chu, along with our outstanding cast, come to fruition in such a meaningful way."

While musical adaptations can be hit-or-miss in theaters, previous Broadway gems like Dear Evan Hansen and In the Heights did not perform as expected, making successes like Mamma Mia! quite rare.

Industry analyst Daniel Loria noted that splitting Wicked into two films was a bold decision, stating, "Most studios would have opted for a single film. Extracting two blockbusters from the same IP is an impressive accomplishment."

The film's triumph is attributed to the timeless appeal of the Broadway musical, the brilliant casting by director Jon Chu, and a robust marketing strategy. Box office analyst Paul Dergarabedian stated, "It strikes a chord with younger viewers. For them, Wicked holds the same significance as The Sound of Music did for previous generations."

Though critics had mixed reactions, with some commenting that the film felt overly melodramatic, audiences showered it with praise, awarding it an A grade from CinemaScore and a 95% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Sean Gamble, president and CEO of Cinemark, stated, "Wicked: For Good was 30% larger than the first film, marking our second largest November opening ever." Universal noted that the film thrived particularly well in family-oriented markets like Salt Lake City, Utah.

On a global scale, the movie raked in an additional $76 million across 78 international markets, culminating in an estimated total opening weekend of $226 million.
