Tuesday marked another day of suffering in Gaza as heavy rainfall inundated the makeshift tents of thousands of displaced individuals. As winter approaches, families who lost their homes due to an ongoing conflict are now grappling with cold weather and inadequate shelter.
With a population of 2 million, Gaza has seen most residents flee their homes in the wake of the war ignited by the October 2023 Hamas attacks. Despite a ceasefire that has been largely effective since mid-October, widespread destruction has left many individuals in dire living conditions. For nearly two years, families have been stuck in dilapidated tents that can barely withstand adverse weather.
Residents recounted how their camps became submerged as rain transformed them into muddy pools. Um Ahmed Aowdah, standing outside her drenched tent, reflected on the heartbreaking realities they face. She noted that neither her family nor others have received new tents or tarps in over two years, making them vulnerable even to light rain, let alone the severe winter weather.
Humanitarian organizations are sounding alarms about a deepening crisis. The Palestinian NGOs Network estimates that approximately 300,000 new tents are urgently required to accommodate the estimated 1.5 million displaced individuals scattered throughout Gaza. According to the Civil Defence Service, thousands of tents have already succumbed to flooding or damage from recent storms.
In various locales, floodwaters surged to half a meter, demolishing entire tents and even causing a field hospital to suspend activities. Medical teams and local volunteers faced immense challenges as they worked to assist families in recovering whatever remains they could salvage.
The United Nations is striving to deliver winter supplies to Gaza, yet the flow of humanitarian trucks remains limited. Gaza’s authorities have accused Israel of hindering essential aid promised under the terms of the ceasefire, while aid organizations report that critical items are still stuck at border points. Israel refutes these claims, asserting that aid groups must better manage distribution and curb theft. Meanwhile, Hamas denies allegations of pilfering supplies.
As winter unfolds, families anxiously anticipate increased hardships in the coming weeks while they await stronger shelter, heating supplies, and essential necessities.
