World Bank Approves $265M for Morocco Hydropower Project

Post by : Bianca Haleem

The World Bank Board of Directors on Wednesday approved $265 million in financing for the Ifahsa Pumped Hydropower Storage Project in Morocco. The investment marks one of the largest clean energy infrastructure projects in northern Morocco and is considered one of the most significant pumped hydropower storage developments on the African continent. The project is designed to strengthen the country's electricity system while supporting the growing use of renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power.

Project to Improve Electricity Supply Across Morocco

The Ifahsa Pumped Hydropower Storage Project will play an important role in making Morocco's electricity grid more reliable and resilient. As renewable energy production continues to increase, the project will provide flexible energy storage that can balance fluctuations in electricity generation. This will help ensure a cleaner and more dependable electricity supply for households, businesses, and industries across the country while improving the overall stability of the national power grid.

Facility Will Operate Like a Giant Rechargeable Battery

The project will be developed near Chefchaouen and will function as a large rechargeable battery for Morocco's national electricity network. During periods when renewable energy production is high, such as sunny or windy conditions, surplus electricity will be used to pump water into an upper reservoir. When electricity demand increases or renewable generation falls, the stored water will be released through turbines to generate electricity and feed it back into the grid. This system will allow Morocco to make better use of its renewable energy resources while maintaining a stable electricity supply.

Economic Benefits and Employment Opportunities

In addition to strengthening the country's energy infrastructure, the project is expected to generate significant economic benefits. During the construction phase, around 820 direct jobs are expected to be created each year, providing employment opportunities for local communities. The additional renewable energy capacity supported by the project is also expected to create more jobs across Morocco's energy sector and related industries. Businesses will benefit from greater access to cleaner electricity, helping them remain competitive in international markets where demand for low-carbon supply chains continues to grow.

300-Megawatt Project to Support Renewable Energy Expansion

The 300-megawatt pumped hydropower storage facility will enable Morocco to integrate at least 1 gigawatt of additional solar and wind energy into its national electricity grid. By improving the country's ability to store and manage renewable electricity, the project is expected to unlock nearly $1 billion in private investment for future clean energy development. This investment is expected to support Morocco's long-term efforts to expand renewable energy generation and modernize its power infrastructure.

Lower Fossil Fuel Dependence and Reduced Emissions

According to project estimates, the facility will replace around 3 terawatt-hours of electricity that is currently generated from fossil fuels every year. As a result, it is expected to prevent approximately 1.7 million tons of carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions annually, contributing to cleaner energy production and supporting Morocco's broader environmental goals.
