The Toronto Blue Jays moved within one victory of a World Series title after a 6-1 triumph over the Los Angeles Dodgers in Game 5 on Wednesday night at Dodger Stadium. A standout outing from rookie Trey Yesavage powered Toronto’s win and shifted momentum in the seven-game series.
At 22 and in his first major-league season, Yesavage displayed remarkable command, striking out 12 batters without issuing a walk. His performance set a new rookie mark for strikeouts in a World Series game and made him the first pitcher in Fall Classic history to record at least 12 strikeouts with zero walks in a single game.
Toronto jumped on the board immediately when Davis Schneider homered on the first pitch of the contest. Two pitches later Vladimir Guerrero Jr. followed with a solo shot to left, giving the Blue Jays a quick 2-0 lead that they would protect the rest of the night.
The Dodgers managed just one run, a third-inning solo homer by Enrique Hernandez, and continued to struggle to generate offense. Los Angeles has produced only four runs across the last 29 innings, underscoring difficulties against Toronto’s pitching staff.
Shohei Ohtani, who had been a major force earlier in the series, went 0-for-4 in Game 5 and is 0-for-7 over the last two games after a standout performance in Game 3. His recent slump only added to the Dodgers’ offensive woes.
Toronto applied pressure with timely hitting and sharp baserunning. In the fourth inning, a misplay by Dodgers right fielder Teoscar Hernandez turned a Daulton Varsho hit into a triple. Ernie Clement followed with a sacrifice fly to extend the lead to 3-1.
In the seventh, trailing pitchers and defensive miscues widened the gap. After Blake Snell exited with two runners on, a wild pitch and a Bo Bichette RBI single increased Toronto’s advantage to 5-1.
Snell finished with a line that reflected control problems: five runs on six hits over 6 2/3 innings, seven strikeouts and four walks. Those free passes created additional scoring opportunities for the Blue Jays.
Yesavage worked seven strong innings before handing the ball to the bullpen. Relievers Seranthony Dominguez and Jeff Hoffman each delivered a scoreless inning to close out the victory and preserve the lead.
The win puts Toronto up 3-2 in the best-of-seven series, with the remaining games shifting to Toronto. The Blue Jays will have home-field advantage and an opportunity to clinch their first championship since 1993 in front of their fans.
Los Angeles now faces the must-win scenario of taking both remaining games to claim the title. Manager Dave Roberts must revive his club’s lineup quickly, with Friday’s game looming as a pivotal test.
Yesavage’s breakout World Series start has instantly elevated his profile and may be remembered as the turning point in Toronto’s postseason run. If the Blue Jays close it out at home, his Game 5 performance will stand out in franchise history.
