Hasan Youssef Discusses Satire’s Role in a Troubled World

Post by : Meena Hassan

At the BRIDGE Summit 2025, Hasan Youssef captivated the audience with his solo performance titled “A Decade of Satire. Did It Work?”, examining his unique position as a comedian in today’s tumultuous landscape.

He remarked on how his political commentary goes viral more than his actual jokes, saying, “People often view my humor more seriously than I intended.” He highlighted a peculiar reality of the digital era: “A TikTok video can garner more views than a UN resolution, and my posts about Gaza attract more attention than lengthy human rights documents.”

Reframing the effectiveness of satire, Youssef referred to irony as a “language of resistance,” pointing out that audiences frequently seek insights from comedians rather than experts on political issues. “We might not be wiser, but we highlight the absurdity of our reality,” he stated.

He clarified that expecting satire to resolve pressing issues is a common misconception, explaining, “Satire isn’t designed to halt wars or eradicate hunger. Its essential, though modest, role is to preserve our humanity, evoke laughter, and remind us of hope amidst chaos.”

Looking back over the last decade, Youssef acknowledged that satire has achieved its aim by engaging people, averting despair, and fostering a sense of humanity in a society that often converts citizens into mere spectators.

In his closing remarks, he committed to continue crafting humor that scrutinizes authority, confident that even minor humorous acts can instigate change and uphold joy in a pressured world.

The BRIDGE Summit 2025 concluded successfully in Abu Dhabi after three days of enlightening discussions.
