YPF, the state-owned energy giant of Argentina, reported a net loss of $198 million for the third quarter, as revealed on Friday. This loss was largely attributable to a deferred tax charge, underscoring the persistent financial strains the company faces even while boosting its shale production efforts.
The revenues for the period from July to September dropped by 12% year-on-year, totaling $4.64 billion, which fell short of the $4.76 billion analysts had predicted. The adjusted earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA), a crucial profitability indicator, decreased by 1% to $1.36 billion compared to the same timeframe last year.
Overall hydrocarbon production faced a 6% decline to 523,100 barrels per day, attributable to wider operational hurdles. Conversely, shale oil production experienced a significant boost, surging by 35% year-on-year to an average of 170,000 barrels per day. In October, YPF set a new record, achieving 190,000 barrels per day from shale, which now constitutes 70% of the company’s overall oil output.
The Vaca Muerta formation in western Argentina, the heart of YPF’s shale operations, plays a pivotal role in the country’s energy strategy. Notably, even with only 8% of the formation currently under development, it generates 64% of the nation's oil output, making it essential for Argentina’s ambition to become a net energy exporter.
On the downstream front, YPF reported maintaining refinery utilization at 97%, with domestic fuel sales increasing by 3% from the last quarter, as the company gained market share.
While the loss in this quarter largely reflects immediate financial adjustments, the ongoing increase in shale production highlights YPF's vital contribution to Argentina's broader economic aspirations and energy independence strategy.
