Tokyo Governor Visits Kuwait To Boost Science Cooperation

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike and her delegation arrived in Kuwait on Thursday for an important visit to the Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research (KISR). The visit marks a new step in strengthening cooperation between Kuwait and Japan in areas such as science, technology, sustainability, and innovation. The delegation was warmly welcomed by KISR Director General Dr. Faisal Al-Humoudan, who emphasized the visit’s significance in enhancing research collaboration between the two countries.

Dr. Al-Humoudan said this visit represents an important milestone in developing scientific and research partnerships. He explained that KISR and Japanese institutions aim to expand their cooperation in environmental sustainability, energy solutions, and women’s empowerment in science and technology. According to him, this partnership reflects the strong historical and technical ties between Kuwait and Japan and their shared commitment to progress.

Dr. Al-Humoudan recalled that KISR’s roots are closely linked to Japan. The institute was established in 1967 under the New Oil Concession Agreement signed in 1958 between the Government of Kuwait and the Arab Oil Company of Japan. Its first headquarters was located at the company’s premises in Kuwait City. Since then, KISR has maintained long-term cooperation with Japan through joint research, exchange of knowledge, and shared expertise.

During the visit, discussions focused on expanding cooperation in applied research and innovation. Dr. Al-Humoudan said that KISR’s current vision aligns with “New Kuwait 2035,” the national development plan that emphasizes innovation and research as the key to economic diversification and social progress. He added that Japan’s advanced experience in technology and green energy provides valuable opportunities for Kuwait to achieve sustainable growth.

One of the important topics discussed was women’s empowerment in scientific and technical fields. Both sides agreed on the need to create more opportunities for women to participate in innovation and research. Dr. Al-Humoudan said that Japan’s policies supporting women in science could serve as a model for Kuwait’s future programs, promoting inclusiveness and balance in research and development.

Dr. Al-Humoudan emphasized that KISR welcomes all global partnerships that support research excellence and innovation. He said working with advanced nations like Japan allows Kuwait to benefit from modern technologies and scientific practices. Integrating global expertise with Kuwait’s local research will open new paths for development, sustainability, and international recognition in the field of R&D.

Governor Koike’s visit also aims to encourage more joint projects in applied science and technology. KISR and Japanese institutions plan to explore areas such as renewable energy, water management, and environmental protection. Both countries see these sectors as vital for achieving long-term sustainability and technological leadership in the region.

The Tokyo Governor’s visit reflects Japan’s growing interest in supporting Kuwait’s scientific and innovation goals. It highlights both nations’ commitment to building bridges through knowledge exchange, joint research, and future-focused collaboration. Dr. Al-Humoudan said this partnership will not only enhance the quality of research but also support Kuwait’s transition toward a diversified, innovation-driven economy.

The visit of Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike to Kuwait marks a new chapter in scientific diplomacy between the two countries. Through this partnership, Kuwait and Japan aim to exchange expertise, develop advanced research projects, and promote sustainable technologies. As both nations look ahead, their cooperation in science and innovation will continue to play a vital role in shaping a smarter, greener, and more connected future.
