Accessibility Conference 2026 Set for UAE's Zayed National Museum

Post by : Bianca Haleem

The Zayed National Museum in the UAE is set to host the Accessibility Conference 2026, themed “From Barriers to Belonging – Accessibility in Museum Practices”, from November 3 to 5, 2026.

This significant event aims to enhance accessibility in museums and cultural institutions by fostering comprehensive and sustainable changes rather than fleeting measures. Participants, experts, and organizations from across the globe will converge to share personal experiences and brainstorm practical solutions.

Dr. Peter Magee, the museum's director, emphasized that the conference underlines the museum's dedication to making culture, creativity, and knowledge universally accessible. He mentioned the institution's goal to be a global benchmark for inclusive cultural practices, ensuring that individual accessibility needs are addressed during the conference.

In conjunction with the conference announcement, the museum has initiated a global call for papers. Submissions that demonstrate real-world experiences, research, and innovative concepts regarding accessibility in the cultural sector are encouraged.

Applicants are required to provide:

  • A 300–400 word abstract
  • The selected conference question
  • Organization name
  • Names and roles of presenters
  • Any additional accessibility requirements

Discussion topics at the conference will include:

  • Ways museums can instigate social change in communities
  • Community involvement in shaping museum practices
  • Showcasing local disability narratives and insights
  • Establishing sustainable and accountable accessibility frameworks
  • Enhancing accessibility in outdoor, historical, and climate-sensitive environments while ensuring conservation and visitor safety

This event is aligned with the museum's broader mission to enhance the accessibility of cultural knowledge and heritage through collaborations, research, and engaging public discussions.

The submission deadline for papers is June 30, 2026, with notifications to selected participants set for July 15, 2026.
