Zelensky Dismisses Aide Yermak Following Corruption Raid

Post by : Raina Al-Fahim

President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine has terminated the position of one of his key aides, Andriy Yermak, following a significant raid conducted by investigators at Yermak’s residence, part of an extensive corruption inquiry. This development signifies a critical political upheaval in Kyiv during the ongoing war and comes as Ukraine faces mounting pressure both militarily and diplomatically.

This action represents a considerable setback for Zelensky at a time when he is grappling with a renewed Russian offensive in the east. The dismissal coincides with the United States — Ukraine's vital ally — unexpectedly suggesting a peace proposal perceived by many in Kyiv as advantageous for Moscow.

Just days ago, Zelensky expressed confidence in Yermak by appointing him as the chief negotiator to optimize Washington’s proposal. However, the announcement of Yermak’s resignation, delivered through a video message by Zelensky, has altered this course. Shortly thereafter, a decree was signed to officially remove Yermak from his duties.

The National Anti-Corruption Agency and the Specialised Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office confirmed their search of Yermak’s apartment, though no details were disclosed about the investigation. Yermak is reportedly cooperating with authorities and has previously been associated with a suspected $100-million kickback scheme in Ukraine's energy sector, which has sparked public outrage as Russia persists in targeting the nation’s power infrastructure.

With the ongoing crisis causing blackouts and heating shortages, public sentiment regarding the scandal is heightened. In his address, Zelensky called for national unity, warning that any loss of cohesion could jeopardize Ukraine’s future stability.

Consultations for a successor will commence on Saturday. Until a new appointment is made, discussions with the United States will proceed with the involvement of military, diplomatic, and intelligence representatives from Ukraine. US Army Secretary Dan Driscoll is slated to visit Kyiv soon to discuss the proposal for ending the conflict, while Donald Trump’s envoy, Steve Witkoff, plans to meet with Vladimir Putin in Moscow.

Yermak, who has been seen as Zelensky’s closest advisor, faced criticism from opponents who claim he monopolized access to the president and marginalized dissenters. Before teaming up with Zelensky in 2019, Yermak had a background in film production and copyright law, eventually earning a reputation as the unofficial “vice-president” of Ukraine.

Despite his allegiance to Zelensky, Yermak remains broadly unpopular among the populace. A survey conducted in March 2025 revealed that nearly two-thirds of Ukrainians do not place their trust in him. Analysts suggest that his dismissal may enhance Kyiv’s negotiating position with Washington during this volatile period.

EU officials have voiced support for Ukraine’s anti-corruption agencies, commending their independence in light of Zelensky's past efforts to diminish their authority—a move he later reverted following public uproar and EU advocacy.

Throughout the conflict, Yermak has been a steadfast ally of Zelensky. Reports indicate they frequently collaborated closely within the presidential bunker. However, as Ukraine encounters this pivotal juncture in both military and diplomatic arenas, political errors could have serious ramifications.

Zelensky emphasized that Russia is poised for Ukraine's misstep, assuring that the nation would not yield to the expectations of its adversary.
