The Japanese national football team is facing challenges as goalkeeper Zion Suzuki has withdrawn from the upcoming international friendlies. Due to injuries to his wrist and finger, Suzuki will miss the matches against Ghana and Bolivia that are set to take place later this week. This announcement was confirmed by the Japanese Football Association (JFA) on Sunday.
The injury transpired during a Serie A match for his club, Parma, against AC Milan, which ended in a 2-2 draw. According to Parma’s report, the 23-year-old goalkeeper suffered fractures in his left hand during the game. Medical scans indicated a composite fracture in the middle finger and the scaphoid bone, near the wrist.
In light of Suzuki’s absence, the JFA has called up Taishi Brandon Nozawa from Belgian club Royal Antwerp as a replacement. Nozawa has shown commendable performance in the Belgian league and will join the national team immediately for the two friendlies. The JFA has expressed its support for Suzuki, wishing him a swift recovery while welcoming Nozawa as a strong addition to the squad.
Japan's friendly schedule includes a match against Ghana on Friday at the Toyota Stadium in Aichi Prefecture, followed by a meeting with Bolivia in Tokyo just four days later. These matches are vital as Japan prepares for future international competitions, including the AFC Asian Cup qualifiers and World Cup qualifying rounds, and provide an opportunity for head coach Hajime Moriyasu to evaluate new players and tactics.
Parma elaborated in a statement, saying, “After sustaining an injury against AC Milan, Zion Suzuki underwent scans, revealing a composite fracture in the middle finger of his left hand and the scaphoid bone.” The club has indicated that further specialist consultations will help determine an appropriate treatment plan, with surgery likely necessary for a complete recovery.
Medical teams from both Parma and the JFA are collaborating to oversee Suzuki’s recovery. Initial reports suggest he may be sidelined for several weeks, contingent on surgery and rehabilitation. Given the delicate nature of wrist and finger injuries, especially for goalkeepers, both the club and national team are prioritizing a careful recovery over an expedited return.
With Suzuki’s exit, Japan's goalkeeping options will be rearranged. Nozawa will join seasoned veteran Eiji Kawashima and young talent Kosei Tani. Coach Moriyasu will now decide who to field in the upcoming matches, and Nozawa's selection could allow for broader testing of Japan's goalkeeping capabilities as they prepare for important fixtures ahead.
Prior to his injury, Zion Suzuki had showcased outstanding form at Parma. After joining the Italian side, he quickly became their first-choice goalkeeper, receiving accolades for his agility and composure under pressure. His recent performances had solidified his role in Japan’s national team, making this injury particularly disappointing.
Following the injury update, Suzuki received a wave of encouragement from fans, teammates, and football organizations. While supporters expressed their disappointment regarding his absence from the upcoming matches, they also conveyed best wishes for his recovery. Parma fans shared their gratitude on social media for his contributions this season and extended their well-wishes as he starts the recovery journey.
Japan still holds optimism about the upcoming matches against Ghana and Bolivia. These friendlies offer an opportunity for younger players to showcase their skills and allow the coaching staff to explore new formations. The team's primary focus remains on preparing for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, where squad depth and balance will be crucial.
At this juncture, Suzuki's priority lies in rehabilitation and regaining full fitness. Experts believe that, provided successful surgery and a consistent recovery process, he should be ready to return to action in the coming months. His resilience and dedication have been noted by both Parma and the Japan national team, who are confident he will emerge stronger.
