The 2026 FIFA World Cup has officially become the highest-attended tournament in the competition’s history, surpassing the long-standing attendance record set during the 1994 World Cup, FIFA announced on Thursday.
The milestone was reached during the second half of Germany’s match against Ecuador in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Giant screens inside the stadium displayed the new all-time attendance figure of 3,605,357, prompting loud applause from supporters in the crowd.
The previous record of nearly 3.6 million spectators was established during the 1994 FIFA World Cup. The achievement is particularly significant because that tournament consisted of only 52 matches, while the 2026 World Cup still has 48 matches remaining, giving the event the opportunity to increase its overall attendance substantially before the tournament concludes.
According to FIFA, stadiums across the tournament have been operating at an average of more than 99% capacity, highlighting the strong demand for matches throughout the competition.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino welcomed the record-breaking achievement, saying it reflects the worldwide passion for football and the sport’s unique ability to unite people in an atmosphere of joy and celebration.
