Akshay Bhatia produced a stunning comeback to win the Arnold Palmer Invitational after defeating Daniel Berger in a playoff at Bay Hill Club and Lodge on Sunday.
The 24-year-old American golfer fought back strongly on the back nine to secure his third PGA Tour title, all of which have come through playoffs. His victory came in the prestigious $20 million signature event and earned him a $4 million prize.
Bhatia’s round started with frustration when he missed a short 30-inch par putt. However, he quickly recovered and produced an impressive performance. He made four consecutive birdies early on the back nine, including a long putt of nearly 60 feet on the 11th hole, which pushed him back into contention.
With three holes remaining, Bhatia trailed Berger by two shots. On the par-5 16th, he hit a brilliant 6-iron shot that nearly went into the cup on its second bounce. The shot set up a simple eagle putt that kept him firmly in the title race and electrified the crowd.
Berger had appeared in full control earlier in the round. He built a four-shot lead by the turn and looked set to secure the title. However, the momentum shifted when he missed a seven-foot par putt on the 17th hole, allowing Bhatia to close the gap.
Both players finished the tournament tied at 15-under-par 273, forcing a playoff on the 18th hole. Berger pulled his tee shot into the rough but recovered well to reach the green. His long putt stopped seven feet short, but he missed the par attempt that would have extended the playoff.
Bhatia, meanwhile, played safely to the center of the green. He calmly two-putted from just under 30 feet to seal the victory and claim one of the biggest wins of his career.
The win moves Bhatia into the top 20 in the world rankings ahead of a busy stretch of major tournaments, including the upcoming The Masters next month.
Berger finished second and earned $2.2 million along with a place in the The Open Championship. Cameron Young and Ludvig Åberg shared third place, while world number one Scottie Scheffler finished tied for 24th after a final-round 73.
Wearing the traditional red cardigan awarded to the champion, Bhatia said he felt inspired by the spirit of legendary golfer Arnold Palmer, whose famous motto encourages players to “play boldly to win.”
