Tens of thousands of Albanians gathered in the capital, Tirana, for the 21st consecutive day of protests against a planned luxury resort project linked to US President Donald Trump’s family.
The demonstrations, which began in late May, have grown into one of the largest protest movements in Albania in recent years. Protesters are opposing a luxury resort development backed by Ivanka Trump and her husband Jared Kushner on the country’s southern coast, arguing that the project threatens protected natural areas and lacks transparency.
Saturday’s rally drew one of the biggest crowds since the protests began. Many members of the Albanian diaspora returned home to join the demonstration. Protesters waved Albanian and American flags, released red balloons, and held signs reading “Albania is not for sale.” The same slogan was projected onto the facade of the prime minister’s office.
Demonstrators say they are not against economic development but want greater transparency and public accountability for projects that could significantly affect local communities and the environment. Many participants have also called for Prime Minister Edi Rama to resign, accusing his government of allowing opaque development deals along Albania’s coastline.
The controversial resort project, along with another planned development on nearby Sazan Island, would be located close to important breeding grounds within the Vjosa-Narta protected area. Environmental groups and activists have warned that the developments could threaten migratory bird habitats, including areas used by large flocks of flamingos.

Environmental concerns have now merged with broader political frustration, turning the resort project into a symbol of public anger over alleged corruption and government decision-making. Protest leaders have vowed to continue demonstrations until their concerns are addressed.
Prime Minister Edi Rama has rejected calls to step down and defended the project. Speaking at a party meeting, he argued that much of the controversy stems from the involvement of Jared Kushner and the connection to Donald Trump rather than the details of the development itself.
As protests enter their third week, the dispute has become one of Albania’s most significant political and environmental controversies, drawing national and international attention.
