Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has firmly stated that no external pressure, “not even the Pope,” could make him change his preferred 3-4-3 system. The Portuguese coach spoke out after being asked if co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe had suggested altering his tactics. Amorim is under mounting scrutiny following United’s worst Premier League start in 33 years, with critics questioning his steadfast commitment to the formation.
Pressure On Amorim
Critics argue that the 40-year-old manager should switch to a back-four formation, but Amorim emphasized that consistency and responsibility are key to his coaching philosophy. He explained that making sudden changes due to pressure could negatively affect the team’s dynamics and players’ trust in his leadership. “This is my job. This is my responsibility. This is my life. There will be an evolution, but we need to make all the good steps,” he said.
Goalkeeper Decisions Under Review
While Amorim remains firm on his tactical system, he indicated that goalkeeping positions may see adjustments. Altay Bayindir has started all four league games this season, but deadline-day signing Senne Lammens is set to compete for the No.1 spot. Amorim stressed that no player has a guaranteed position and that every player must compete for a place on the pitch.
Focus On Winning Games
Amorim reiterated that his priority is to win matches, regardless of opposition or player situations. Regarding the return of Alejandro Garnacho to Old Trafford, the manager stated that he is solely focused on game results and not concerned with media narratives or opponent line-ups. Garnacho returns to the squad after leaving United following a fallout with Amorim after the Europa League final defeat to Tottenham Hotspur.
Upcoming Challenge Against Chelsea
Manchester United are preparing to host Chelsea at Old Trafford on Saturday, aiming to bounce back from their recent derby defeat to Manchester City. Amorim remains committed to his tactical philosophy while adapting to ensure the team performs at its best. “We are just trying to win games. Trying to see what is the best option to win the next game,” he said.
Maintaining Team Principles
Amorim’s statements underline a clear principle: tactical consistency is crucial for long-term team performance. While critics call for flexibility, the manager believes that a steady approach, combined with careful evaluation of player roles, offers the best chance for success. His focus remains on building strong team cohesion, selecting the best lineup, and securing points in the challenging Premier League campaign.
