Veteran actor Anupam Kher recently opened up about his early experiments with marijuana and bhaang, sharing amusing and intense experiences on the podcast Unfiltered by Samdish. The 70-year-old reflected on how these incidents convinced him never to use such substances again.
Kher recounted one memorable incident with marijuana. “I think I must have taken two drags, and then I looked up at the sky. A plane must have taken off from the airport, so I started watching it. I kept watching it until it became a tiny dot in the sky, and I think I kept looking until it must have landed at Heathrow Airport,” he said.
The actor admitted that the drug left him feeling disoriented and anxious. “I had gone crazy. When I sat in my car later, I couldn’t tell whether the road was moving or the car was moving,” Kher recalled. This overwhelming sensation made him decide to avoid marijuana in the future.
His experiences with bhaang at the National School of Drama (NSD) were even more intense. Kher shared, “Once I tried it, I swore I would never do it again because I laughed for eight hours straight.” The actor also recalled how his batchmates reacted while under its influence. “They were standing on the terrace, telling the warden, ‘The army is coming.’ I kept laughing and begged them to save me,” he said.
Kher described another moment of confusion where he kept waiting for his friend to reply, wondering why he wasn’t responding. “It was exactly like the scenes from Jim Carrey’s film The Mask. After that, I never touched bhaang again,” he added.
He also recalled an older incident where airport authorities suspected incense in his luggage to be a drug. His wife, Kirron Kher, unintentionally worsened the situation by saying, “‘Charas lekar ghoom rahe ho (You’re travelling with hashish)?’” The actor humorously described his reaction, “I told her, ‘If I survive these people, I’ll come out and divorce you.’”
Through these stories, Kher highlighted the intensity of early substance experiments and their long-lasting impact. He described these moments as both frightening and comical, showing how they shaped his decisions later in life. The actor emphasized that such experiences taught him to avoid substances like marijuana and bhaang altogether.
Anupam Kher’s anecdotes provide a candid glimpse into the lighter and more humorous side of his personal life, showing that even celebrities have surprising and entertaining stories from their youth. His reflections also underline the lesson that curiosity in early life can sometimes lead to unexpected and unforgettable experiences.
