According to a JP Morgan research note highlighted by MacRumors, Apple is gearing up for a significant enhancement in the front cameras of its forthcoming iPhone 18 lineup. The report indicates that every flagship model—including the iPhone 18, iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, iPhone Air 2, and the anticipated foldable model—will incorporate a 24-megapixel front camera, a substantial upgrade from the 18-megapixel variants found in the previous iPhone 17 series.
This upgrade is poised to elevate Apple's selfie capabilities, offering sharper visuals, better performance in low-light conditions, and superior detail for portraits. Following the iPhone 17 series, which featured an 18-megapixel sensor and the innovative “Center Stage” function for better video call focus, this update reflects an evolution in Apple’s approach.
The foldable iPhone, likely to be named iPhone 18 Fold, is speculated to feature Apple’s inaugural under-display front camera with a 24-megapixel resolution. This design would facilitate an uninterrupted inner screen, a first for Apple’s device aesthetics. The foldable model is expected to adopt a book-like form factor, akin to Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold range.
While the premium variants are anticipated to receive these camera upgrades, the budget-friendly iPhone 18e and the second generation of iPhone 17e are rumored to continue with a 12-megapixel front camera, aiming to keep prices accessible for everyday users.
Additionally, a shift in Apple’s release strategy might occur, with the traditional single yearly launch replaced by two separate phases beginning in 2026. Higher-end models like the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone Air 2, and foldable variant could be released in the latter half of 2026, while standard models may follow in spring 2027.
As these anticipated updates suggest, Apple is keen on elevating front-camera technology, aligning with social media trends and the surge in demand for superior selfies and video communication.
