Australia Wrap Up ODI Series Against India with Late Drama

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

In an exhilarating encounter at Adelaide Oval, Australia clinched their one-day international (ODI) series against India with a narrow two-wicket victory. Chasing India's total of 264 for nine, the Australians managed to cross the finish line with 3.4 overs to spare, driven by the impressive efforts of Matt Short and rising star Cooper Connolly.

Matt Short, batting at number three, played a crucial role with a determined 74, even after sustaining a finger injury earlier in the match. His partnership with Connolly, who achieved his first international half-century, was key to their success. Connolly's unbeaten contribution of 61 ensured the team steadied after a few fraught moments. "It was an exciting experience. I felt quite nervous," Connolly reflected post-match. "I’m thrilled for the team’s win."

India's innings was anchored by captain Rohit Sharma, who top-scored with 73 runs off 97 balls. His innings helped the team recover from an early slump, although it ultimately lacked the necessary run support to withstand Australia’s advance. This knock also saw Rohit move past Sourav Ganguly into third on India’s all-time ODI run-scorers list. However, the night was marred by dropped catches and missed opportunities for the visitors.

Notably, Virat Kohli faced a rough evening, registering a second consecutive duck in ODIs, marking the first time in his 300-match career this has happened. Kohli was lbw to young pacer Xavier Bartlett on just his fourth delivery, paralleling his earlier dismissal in Perth. These back-to-back failures further compounded India’s top-order struggles against Australia’s pace attack.

Australian bowlers took advantage of home conditions masterfully. Xavier Bartlett captured 3 wickets for 39 runs, dismissing both Indian openers — Shubman Gill and Kohli — early on. Additionally, spinner Adam Zampa regained form with 4 for 60, earning him the man-of-the-match accolades. His pivotal middle-overs spells delivered crucial breakthroughs at a time when Rohit and Shreyas Iyer (61) were appearing steady.

While regular wickets fell for India, tail-enders provided critical support with Harshit Rana (24 not out) and Arshdeep Singh (13) accumulating 37 runs for the ninth wicket. Their contributions enabled India to reach a moderate total of 264, setting up an exciting match in favorable batting conditions at Adelaide Oval.

In response to the 265 runs required, Australia saw mixed fortunes with openers Mitchell Marsh (11) and Travis Head (28) failing to establish a foothold. However, Matt Renshaw's 30 provided some stability. Short and Connolly soon took charge, with Short benefitting from a dropped catch on 55 — a pivotal moment for the Australians. After Short's dismissal, Connolly partnered with Mitchell Owen, contributing a 59-run partnership, which brought the side close to victory.

Just as Australia appeared to be firmly in control, a sudden collapse saw them lose three wickets for a mere 14 runs, increasing the pressure. Nonetheless, Connolly demonstrated composure through a few elegant boundaries, eventually sealing the win due to a wide delivery from Arshdeep Singh that brought the winning run. The crowd erupted in joy as Connolly's unbeaten 61 secured both the match and series.

In another context, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has sought Supreme Court intervention to classify match-fixing as a criminal act, asserting that it jeopardizes the game’s integrity and should be addressed under existing cheating laws in India. This appeal follows an alleged match-fixing incident during a Karnataka league in 2018-2019. The BCCI claims that match-fixing constitutes 'cheating by deception' and is therefore encompassed under the Indian Penal Code. The case is ongoing, and the cricket community waits for the court's verdict.

With this win in Adelaide, Australia has secured the series, but both teams will aim to assert themselves in the final ODI in Sydney. For India, it represents an opportunity to regain confidence ahead of upcoming home fixtures, while Australia will be looking to extend their winning run and assess their squad depth before the international season concludes.
