In an impressive showcase of skill, Australia secured a six-wicket victory over England in the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025. Central to this win was an outstanding unbroken partnership of 180 runs between Annabel Sutherland and Ash Gardner. Their exceptional collaboration allowed the defending champions to bounce back from early setbacks and successfully chase England’s score. The match unfolded at the Holkar Stadium in Indore, providing fans with an exhilarating clash between two formidable sides.
The Australian innings faced early challenges, with England’s bowlers making quick inroads during the powerplay. Lauren Bell struck first, sending Phoebe Litchfield back to the pavilion in the very first over. Following that, Linsey Smith mounted further pressure by dismissing Georgia Voll and Ellyse Perry, leaving Australia precariously positioned at 68 for four. It seemed that England might be on the verge of an upset.
With the team struggling, Ash Gardner and Annabel Sutherland joined forces to lift the innings. Initially, they played conservatively, focusing on rotating the strike and taking advantage of loose deliveries. Gaining confidence, they shifted gears and soon Gardner brought up her second century of the tournament, finishing with a remarkable 104 not out off just 73 deliveries, adorned with 16 boundaries. Sutherland provided solid support, remaining unbeaten on 98, inclusive of nine fours and a six. Their partnership decisively reversed Australia’s fortunes.
Earlier in the match, England batted first after being invited to do so by Australia. Openers Tammy Beaumont and Amy Jones created a solid foundation, accumulating 55 runs for the first wicket with frequent boundaries. However, the introduction of Annabel Sutherland transformed the dynamics of the innings as she dismissed Amy Jones with a superb delivery that clattered into the off stump. This breakthrough marked the beginning of Australia’s control over the match.
Following Sutherland’s initial success, Australia continued the assault. Sophie Molineux managed to pin down England captain Heather Knight leg-before-wicket, and Alana King took out the dangerous Nat Sciver-Brunt with her crafty bowling. Tammy Beaumont stood resilient for England, scoring 78 runs off 105 balls, with 10 fours and a six. Yet her dismissal, thanks to a sharp catch by Georgia Voll near the boundary, hindered England's momentum. Despite contributions from Alice Capsey (38) and Charlie Dean (26), England finished at 244 for nine in their allotted overs.
In their pursuit of 245 runs, Australia initially felt the pressure but maintained their composure. Beth Mooney and Sutherland attempted to steady the innings until Mooney was caught sharply by Sciver-Brunt. Ash Gardner then stepped in, altering the trajectory of Australia’s inning dramatically. Both Gardner and Sutherland executed the chase flawlessly, rotating the strike and easily finding boundaries. Their monumental partnership not only salvaged Australia's innings but also confirmed the win with overs to spare.
This victory further cements Australia’s dominance in the tournament, placing them at the top of the points table with 11 points from six matches, one of which was washed out. This marks their fifth win, reaffirming their status as strong contenders to clinch the title once again. England holds the third position but has already secured a place in the semi-finals.
Next, Australia will face off against South Africa in their final league match on October 25, while England will challenge New Zealand the following day. Both teams aim to iron out any kinks in their strategies ahead of the semi-finals.
The match illustrated Australia’s depth and strength as a team. Overcoming early adversities, Gardner and Sutherland emerged as the backbone of the innings, showcasing their collective calm, skill, and collaboration—key attributes that have established Australia as the leading force in women’s cricket. England had positives such as early wickets and Tammy Beaumont’s innings, but they will need to establish more consistency in their batting to mount a serious title challenge.
