China has officially put into service the Fujian, its most sophisticated aircraft carrier, marking a significant achievement in the nation’s rapid naval development. This event follows a prominent ceremony held in Hainan province, which saw the participation of Chinese President Xi Jinping, who inspected the vessel and interacted with the crew.
The Fujian represents a significant advancement for the Chinese navy. Unlike the initial two carriers, Liaoning and Shandong, which were largely inspired by Russian designs, the Fujian has been entirely domestically manufactured and features an advanced electromagnetic catapult system. This technology enables aircraft to launch at increased speeds, allowing for the transportation of heavier armaments and fuel, thus facilitating strikes over greater distances.
Reports from state media underscore that the Fujian can deploy three different aircraft varieties from its expansive flight deck. The advanced launch capabilities make this carrier more adaptable and formidable compared to its predecessors. Analysts remark that only the U.S. manages carriers equipped with electromagnetic catapults, placing China in a distinguished global sphere.
The commissioning event itself was a display of military pride, with sailors on the deck and docks saluting and chanting in unison: “Follow the party’s command, fight to win, and maintain discipline!” It is noted that Xi made the decision to incorporate the electromagnetic catapult technology, highlighting China’s unwavering commitment to modernizing its naval fleet.
China’s navy has expanded rapidly over the recent years, with the Fujian symbolizing both a literal and figurative advance. Experts indicate that this carrier enhances Beijing’s capacity to project power in local waters, presenting new strategic hurdles for the U.S. and its allies.
