Dubai has rolled out new regulations governing shop signage as part of a broader initiative to enhance the city's aesthetic appeal, minimize clutter, and improve road safety.
These measures, overseen by the Dubai Civility Committee and enforced by the Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism (DET), are rooted in the Outdoor Advertising Manual released in 2024, developed in collaboration with the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), Dubai Municipality, and Mada Media, the authority overseeing outdoor advertising in Dubai.
Under the new guidelines, commercial establishments are restricted to just one trade name displayed on their shopfronts, prohibiting multiple signs or advertisements on a single storefront.
Design standards for signage are also clearly defined. Trade names must be displayed horizontally, with Arabic text positioned above English text. Additionally, signs are permitted to project from only one side of the storefront.
To ensure a cohesive cityscape, signage should be proportionate to the size of the shop, and oversized or excessively thick signs are prohibited. The regulations also stipulate established lighting standards, including appropriate brightness levels and the use of sanctioned measurement tools. Bright white backgrounds are discouraged.
Animated, moving, or video signs are strictly banned, requiring all trade-name displays to be static.
Furthermore, the installation of trade-name signage on building balconies and on the facades of offices, clinics, and commercial units above the ground floor is prohibited.
The DET is tasked with issuing signage permits and conducting inspections to ensure adherence to these regulations. Authorities have called upon business owners and relevant entities to comply with the new rules to achieve uniformity in storefront design.
Officials highlighted that these regulations aim to eliminate random decorative elements and excessive lighting while enhancing Dubai’s urban environment. This initiative supports the objectives of the Dubai Civility Committee and aligns with the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan, which focuses on boosting the city's aesthetic and global standing.
