Dubai is preparing to take a giant leap into the future of transportation with the launch of its first fleet of flying taxis on March 31, 2026. Skyports CEO Duncan Walker confirmed the date in an exclusive interview, announcing that the first vertiport at Dubai International Airport is almost complete and ready to begin operations early next year.
This development is part of Dubai’s ambitious plan to modernize public transport and reduce traffic congestion across the city and nearby emirates.
Flying Taxi Network
The flying taxis will operate from several vertiports across the UAE:
Dubai International Airport – the first vertiport, now at full helideck level across three floors.
Palm Jumeirah
Dubai Marina
Dubai Mall
Additional vertiports are planned for Ras Al Khaimah (RAK), including Jebel Jais and Wynn Resort on Al Marjan Island, with operations expected to start in 2027. Construction in Ras Al Khaimah will begin next year following an agreement between the RAK Transport Authority, Joby, and Skyports.
Skyports also revealed ongoing discussions with Sharjah and Abu Dhabi for future vertiports, while an agreement with Ajman has already been signed.
Travel Time and Ticket Cost
Flying taxis promise to dramatically reduce travel time. A trip from Ras Al Khaimah to Dubai, which normally takes an hour and a half by car, will now take only 15-20 minutes. This speed could transform commuting for business travelers, tourists, and residents.
Tickets are expected to cost $200-$300 per person, which is considered reasonable when compared to traditional taxi fares for the same journey. This pricing aims to make flying taxis accessible while reflecting the advanced technology and convenience of the service.
Supporting Public Transportation
Skyports emphasized that vertiports will also be accessible to all helicopters, helping to integrate the flying taxis into Dubai’s broader public transportation network. The initiative aligns with the UAE’s goal to embrace advanced transport solutions and reduce road traffic.
The flying taxi project is more than a novelty; it represents Dubai’s efforts to combine innovation, efficiency, and sustainability. By providing fast, safe, and flexible air travel, these taxis are expected to complement existing metro, bus, and taxi services across the city.
Challenges and Considerations
While the technology is exciting, several factors need attention:
Safety and regulation: Flying taxis will operate above busy urban areas, requiring strict safety measures and air traffic management.
Cost and accessibility: Although priced moderately, widespread access for residents may take time as the service scales.
Infrastructure readiness: Vertiports and air corridors must be fully operational and coordinated with other air traffic systems.
Despite these challenges, Dubai’s authorities and private companies like Skyports and Joby are confident that the project will succeed, setting an example for other cities worldwide.
Editorial Perspective
Dubai’s flying taxi project is a bold step toward the future of urban mobility. The city has long been a leader in innovation, tourism, and infrastructure, and flying taxis continue that trend.
The project shows how modern technology can solve everyday problems like traffic congestion and long travel times. At the same time, it demonstrates a commitment to sustainable and futuristic urban planning, preparing the city for increased population and economic growth.
The success of flying taxis will depend on careful implementation, safety, and affordability. If done right, it could transform how people move across Dubai and other emirates, making travel faster, more efficient, and exciting.
