During the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly, Egypt’s Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty outlined a clear and detailed Arab and Muslim vision for ending the conflict in Gaza. Speaking to Arab News, he emphasized the urgent need for a ceasefire and a structured plan for security and reconstruction in the war-torn region.
Abdelatty stressed that stopping the ongoing Israeli military operations is the first and most critical step. “The first step … is, of course, ending this unjust war. This is extremely important to stop the Israeli aggression,” he said. According to him, a ceasefire will allow the next steps to be taken, which include the establishment of security arrangements and governance structures in Gaza.
As part of these efforts, Egypt and Jordan are training Palestinian personnel to serve in a security force to be deployed in Gaza, working in full coordination with the Palestinian Authority (PA). Abdelatty also noted the possibility of international forces participating, provided the Security Council mandates their deployment with the goal of supporting the PA to achieve an independent Palestinian state.
To manage Gaza during the transitional period, Arab countries propose the creation of a neutral, non-partisan administrative committee. This committee would govern temporarily in coordination with the PA and eventually hand full control back to the Palestinian authorities. Abdelatty emphasized that this administrative body is strictly non-political and not affiliated with any factions.
Abdelatty also called for a prompt international conference to implement a comprehensive Arab-Islamic recovery and reconstruction plan for Gaza. He noted that the plan has already received endorsements from the European Union, Japan, and the wider international community. The goal of this conference would be to rebuild Gaza, restore infrastructure, and provide essential services for the displaced and affected population.
Highlighting the main obstacle to progress, the Egyptian minister identified “the lack of political will from the Israeli side.” He said that ending the aggression quickly is essential to advance the next steps, including rebuilding Gaza and securing the release of hostages and Palestinian prisoners.
Abdelatty confirmed that Egypt is coordinating with the United States and Qatar to ensure humanitarian aid reaches those in need and to achieve a fair and lasting resolution. His remarks underscore Egypt’s active role as a mediator and its commitment to a peaceful, stable, and independent future for Gaza.
