In a remarkable achievement at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru, South Africa A successfully chased down a daunting target of 417 runs against India A, clinching the match with five wickets to spare. This chase stands as the highest successful fourth-innings pursuit in first-class cricket in India since 2016, ranking sixth in the nation’s history.
Connor Esterhuizen delivered a stellar performance with an undefeated 52 runs, confidently tackling the Indian spin attack with eight boundaries and a six. His aggressive innings played a crucial role in ensuring South Africa A completed the chase effectively. Esterhuizen formed an unbroken sixth-wicket partnership of 65 runs with Tiaan van Vuuren, securing victory just before bad light became a concern.
The match commenced with a magnificent opening stand from Lesego Senokwane and Jordan Hermann, who amassed 156 runs without loss. Their attacking approach against the Indian pacers, including Prasidh Krishna and Mohammed Siraj, set a strong tone early in the day.
India A's premier spinner, Kuldeep Yadav, struggled to find his rhythm on a pitch that provided little assistance for spin. Both openers navigated his deliveries with ease, showcasing patience and skill. When Yadav bowled fuller, they elegantly drove him, while short pitches invited backsweeps to counter his slow turn. The flat pitch hampered India A's ability to impose control on the batting.
Jordan Hermann took charge of the scoring initially, striking Akash Deep for four exquisite boundaries. He reached his half-century off 73 balls, displaying confidence throughout. Meanwhile, India A's bowlers struggled with inconsistent movement, with edges failing to reach slips, a frustrating experience for them.
Lesego Senokwane also reached a significant milestone, scoring his half-century in 113 deliveries. Demonstrating a balanced approach, he navigated the pacers while aggressively targeting left-arm spinner Harsh Dubey. Hermann was fortunate with a bouncer that went unclaimed by wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant, who was unable to reach it on time.
Prasidh Krishna ultimately broke the partnership when Hermann hit a full toss back to him, departing on 91 runs. Following this, Mohammed Siraj applied pressure with a fiery spell, leading to Senokwane being trapped leg before wicket by Dubey for 77, marking the end of a solid innings.
Post the openers’ dismissal, Temba Bavuma and Zubayr Hamza forged a pivotal 107-run partnership for the third wicket. Both players, with Test squad experience, contributed significantly to the chase, with Bavuma adopting a cautious approach after a first-innings duck, while Hamza asserted himself from the outset.
India A faced further challenges when Mohammed Siraj sustained an injury during fielding and required treatment. Additionally, Rishabh Pant was rested for two sessions, allowing Jurel to take over, a strategic decision by the team management amid consecutive matches.
Hamza fell to an inside edge off Prasidh Krishna, shortly followed by Bavuma. India A sensed a breakthrough when Marques Ackerman was caught behind off Siraj, but a replay revealed a no-ball. Ackerman was eventually dismissed for 24, bringing Esterhuizen to the crease. He seized control of the innings, attacking both Kuldeep and Dubey, and guided South Africa A to a celebrated victory in challenging conditions.
This historic win for South Africa A highlights not only impressive hitting power but also strategic patience. Their feat of chasing down 417 runs stands out as a remarkable accomplishment on Indian turf, with Esterhuizen's calm finish underscoring his skill against spin and capacity to deliver under pressure, marking a significant milestone for the team in Bengaluru.
