India's vice-captain Shubman Gill finds himself under scrutiny during the white-ball tour of Australia. The 25-year-old, who returned to T20 internationals at the 2025 Asia Cup, has yet to rediscover consistent form at international level.
Across his last 10 T20I innings Gill has scored 184 runs, averaging 23 with a strike rate of 146 and a highest score of 47. His recent ODI returns have been modest as well, yielding 43 runs in the three-match series against Australia, while competition for top-order places continues to grow.
In the lead-up to the fourth T20I at Carrara Oval a video emerged showing head coach Gautam Gambhir deep in conversation with Gill during a nets session. Posted by RevSportz, the clip sparked suggestions that coaches are addressing either technical tweaks or the batter's mindset.
In the current T20I sequence Gill has managed scores of 37, 5, and 15, highlighting a lack of rhythm. More broadly on the tour his innings read 10, 9, 24, 37, 5, 15—a worrying run for a player expected to steady the top order.
To date Gill has featured in 31 T20Is for India, accumulating 762 runs at an average of 28.22 and a strike rate of 140.85, including one century and three fifties. His only extended bright spell on this trip came in the washed-out Canberra match, where he appeared in good touch early on.
With the series level at 1-1, India will aim to take the lead in Thursday's fourth game. For Gill it is another opportunity to address concerns and reassert himself as a reliable top-order option under the new leadership setup.
