Google has released its “India’s Year in Search 2025”, showcasing the topics that captured the public’s attention across the country. The report highlights searches in technology, national events, entertainment, sports, and food, offering a detailed look at Indian digital habits. Travel, culture, and AI were among the main drivers of search interest this year.
National events shaped a large part of public searches. Following the Pahalgam attack, queries for “Operation Sindoor” and “live updates” surged, reflecting nationwide attention to India’s military response. The passing of veteran actor Dharmendra on November 24 at age 89 sparked tributes, making him the #10 Top Overall Search and the #2 News Event of 2025.
Sports remained highly searched, especially after India’s maiden win at the ICC Women’s World Cup 2025. Players like Jemimah Rodrigues, Smriti Mandhana, and Shafali Verma ranked among the top women’s personalities, while teenage cricketer Vaibhav Suryavanshi became the #1 trending personality.
Entertainment also drew attention online. The romantic film Saiyaara, starring Aneet Padda and Ahaan Panday, was the year’s #1 trending movie, and its title song became the most searched. South Indian films such as Kantara, Coolie, Marco, and Game Changer also received significant interest from viewers.
The report highlighted growing public interest in AI and technology. Google Gemini ranked as the #2 Top Overall Search, while searches for “Gemini saree trend,” “3D model trend,” and AI tools like Grok increased. The question “What is ceasefire?” topped the “Meaning” searches, showing concern for current affairs.
Cultural and culinary interests were also prominent. Searches for traditional foods like Thekua and Ukadiche Modak showed the popularity of Indian cuisine, while “Yorkshire Pudding” indicated global food influences. The collectible toy Labubu became a viral trend, with young fans searching “What is a Labubu?”
Environmental awareness emerged after a walkout on Nikhil Kamath’s podcast due to poor air quality. Searches for “Air Quality near me” and “Near Me” spiked, alongside queries for “Earthquake near me” and “Floodlighting.” Other top searches included “Maha Kumbh” as the leading news event and “What is Waqf Bill” as the top “What Is” query.
Google’s report reflects an engaged population interested in news, entertainment, sports, AI, culture, and social issues, using search as a key tool to stay informed about local and global developments.
