The Football Federation of the Islamic Republic of Iran (FFIRI) has claimed that the United States has retracted ticket allocations for Iranian fans ahead of their three group-stage matches in the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup, raising questions for those wishing to attend.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the FFIRI expressed that this decision was made just days before the World Cup, accusing it of being a deliberate action to obstruct Iranian fans from witnessing their national team play.
FIFA guidelines entitle each participating nation to eight percent of the available tickets for their matches, with responsibility lying on national associations to distribute these tickets to their supporters through official means.
The federation noted it had commenced ticket sales based on its initial allocation, with many fans already making travel plans. However, with the sudden withdrawal of the allocation, they now find themselves unable to provide tickets to their supporters.
The FFIRI criticized this reported decision as inconsistent with the values of fairness and equality that should prevail in international sports. They called for FIFA and the tournament organizers to uphold the established regulations, ensuring Iranian fans can attend the matches.
As of Tuesday, neither FIFA nor the US organizers had commented on the allegations.
This incident emerges amidst ongoing tensions between Iran and the US. Iranian officials have raised concerns that some members of their World Cup delegation encountered visa challenges, hindering certain support staff from entering the United States.
Approximately 15 members of this delegation reportedly did not receive visas, fueling concerns about the team’s preparation for the World Cup.
Due to the political climate, Iran altered its initial training plans, choosing to train in Tijuana, Mexico, instead of Tucson, Arizona, allowing players and staff to secure visas and arrive on site recently.
Iran is set to kick off its World Cup journey against New Zealand in Los Angeles on June 15, followed by a match against Belgium on June 21, and a final group-stage match against Egypt in Seattle on June 26.
This ongoing dispute illustrates how political factors can impact international sports events. While players have arrived in North America and continue preparations, uncertainty looms over whether Iranian fans will be able to secure tickets via their federation.
With the tournament fast approaching, eyes are on FIFA and the organizers to see if a solution can be found prior to Iran's opening match. Any outcome has the potential to affect numerous fans who have already organized travel for the World Cup.
