A devastating fire at a beachfront resort in the Dominican Republic has claimed the life of an Italian tourist and forced the evacuation of nearly 1,700 guests and staff members.
The incident occurred at the Viva Wyndham Dominicus Beach Hotel in Bayahibe, one of the country's most popular tourist destinations. Emergency authorities confirmed that the victim was Francesca Valentino, a 46-year-old woman from Italy.
Emergency Teams Rescue Hundreds as Flames Spread
Firefighters and emergency responders rushed to the scene after the blaze erupted and rapidly spread across parts of the resort. Thick smoke could be seen rising above the coastline as flames engulfed sections of the hotel complex.
Authorities said three people were transported to hospitals for medical treatment, while six others, including guests and emergency personnel, were treated at the scene for minor injuries and smoke exposure.
Palm Roof Structure Accelerated Fire
According to the Dominican Republic's Emergency Operations Center (COE), the fire spread quickly because some sections of the resort's roof were made from palm-based materials, which are highly flammable.
Strong winds in the area further intensified the blaze, making firefighting efforts more challenging and allowing the flames to move rapidly through parts of the property.
Emergency crews worked for several hours before successfully bringing the situation under control.

Investigation Underway
Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the blaze. Officials have not yet announced what may have triggered the fire.
Damage assessments are currently ongoing as investigators continue examining the affected sections of the resort.
Tourism in Region Continues Uninterrupted
Despite the major incident, authorities said tourism activities in Bayahibe and nearby areas remain fully operational.
The Dominican Republic continues to be the Caribbean's leading tourist destination, attracting millions of visitors every year with its beaches, resorts, and tropical attractions. During the first five months of this year alone, the country welcomed approximately 5.6 million tourists.
Officials reassured travelers that tourism services in the region continue to operate safely and normally while recovery efforts remain underway at the affected resort.
