Khalifa University of Science and Technology has signed a new memorandum of understanding with China’s Guangzhou Baiyun Electric Equipment Co., Ltd. (BYE) to work together on clean energy and modern electrification technologies. The agreement aims to create a joint innovation laboratory and support long-term research and development that will benefit the GCC region’s power sector.
The MoU was signed by Professor Ebrahim Al Hajri, President of Khalifa University, and Dezhao Hu, Chairman of BYE. The partnership will focus on several key areas, including renewable energy integration, energy storage, advanced power electronics, hybrid AC/DC transmission networks, transportation electrification, green hydrogen solutions, and AI-based power systems. Both sides will also work on improving data centre integration and creating technologies suited for the GCC’s growing energy needs.
The cooperation includes student internships, technical training, and joint seminars to connect industry experts with academic researchers. Khalifa University’s Advanced Power and Energy Centre (APEC) will act as BYE’s main research and development hub in the UAE. BYE will use APEC’s laboratories to develop joint research projects, while APEC researchers will gain access to BYE’s industrial facilities for stronger collaboration.
Professor Al Hajri said the partnership highlights the university’s commitment to supporting the UAE’s sustainable future and energy transition goals. He added that combining BYE’s product expertise with APEC’s research capabilities will help accelerate the development of new technologies for the GCC market and beyond. Dezhao Hu described the agreement as an important step for BYE, saying the collaboration will support their expansion and strengthen innovation in the region.
As part of the agreement, Khalifa University students will receive summer internships and paid placements at BYE’s industrial and R&D centres. The programme aims to create strong knowledge exchange and train future experts for the region’s changing energy landscape. The MoU also includes an annual training initiative to prepare at least five specialised professionals each year, along with technical lectures and seminars for industry partners.
This collaboration is expected to boost research in renewable energy, modern grid systems, and next-generation electrification technologies, supporting the UAE’s long-term sustainability goals.
