Recently, a Khalistani terrorist, Inderjeet Singh Gosal, was released on bail in Canada just a few days after his arrest. The release has caused concern in India because immediately after coming out of prison, Gosal, along with his close aide Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, issued threats against India’s National Security Adviser Ajit Doval.
The Threats After Bail
In a video obtained by NDTV, Gosal was seen leaving the Ontario Central East Correctional Centre. He declared that he was now free and would support Pannun in his movement for a so-called Khalistan. He mentioned plans to organize a Khalistan referendum on November 23, 2025, claiming that Delhi will become Khalistan.
Pannun, who leads the banned organization Sikhs For Justice (SFJ), also threatened Ajit Doval, saying, “Ajit Doval, why don’t you come to Canada, America, or Europe and try to arrest me? I am waiting for you.” This direct threat to India’s top security official has raised alarms about the security risks posed by overseas separatist groups.
Background of Gosal’s Arrest
Gosal had been arrested in Canada on September 19, 2025, during a traffic stop in Ontario along with two others—Jagdeep Singh from New York and Arman Singh from Toronto. The three were charged with several firearm-related offences including careless use of a firearm, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, and carrying a concealed weapon.
He was granted bail on September 25, 2025, which is not the first time he has been released quickly after arrest. In November 2024, Gosal had been arrested by Peel Regional Police over a violent incident at the Hindu Sabha Mandir in Brampton and was immediately given bail.
Gosal became the Canada organiser of SFJ after the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar in 2023. His release and immediate threats show the challenges India faces with overseas Khalistani groups that continue to operate from countries like Canada.
India-Canada Relations
India and Canada have had a tense relationship in the past due to Canada’s tolerant approach toward Khalistani separatists. The arrests of Gosal and others indicate that Canada’s new government may be taking a slightly stricter approach. Still, the quick bail granted to Gosal raises questions about Canada’s legal system and how it handles cases involving potential threats to India’s sovereignty.
Security Concerns
The threats by Pannun and Gosal highlight ongoing security challenges for India. Overseas separatists continue to use social media and videos to send messages that could inspire violence or destabilize India’s internal peace. The Indian government needs to strengthen its monitoring and international coordination to prevent such threats from turning into real danger.
